Soviet Death and Soviet Subjectivity: Soviet Urban Cemetery as a Metatext
Based on analyzing visual and verbal texts on gravestones, this article examines the instances of “purity” and “hybridity” within the Soviet urban cemetery space and their mutual correlation. The discourse of cultural “purity” is represented here and there throughout almost the entire Soviet period, whereas hybridity, although emerging gradually, proves to be permanent. No immediate connection could be established between changes in cemeterial “text” and Soviet society’s notions as expressed in official documents and the authorities’ projects for the funerary sphere. The corpus of cemeterial texts may be seen as a product of Soviet society’s collective imagination, only to some extent mediated by projects for how this society was to be imagined, masterminded by Soviet administrators.
