‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Cathectic mechanisms of cosmetic surgery: Operation and recovery as a ritual-like process
Kurakin D., Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 2024 Vol. 54 No. 4 P. 448–468
Cultural sociology undertheorizes the emotional dimension of culture. In this study, I use the case of invasive cosmetic surgery to develop conceptual tools for filling this gap. Cosmetic surgery (i) brings a prominent and complex change in meanings of the self and the social image that goes far beyond mere appearance; and (ii) it involves ...

The article introduces a new research program that focuses on the constitutive role of emotions, afect, and their intensity in meaning-making. It opposes the existing broad tradition that efectively posits culture as information, sees cultural processes as coding, transferring, and processing information, and treats emotions as a ‘fuel’ feeding these processes in social life. I ...

Within the framework of this article, we aim to codify the sociological approaches that have taken place earlier and are still relevant to the analysis of fiction. Particular attention is paid to the so-called cultural-sociological line of thought, the main specificity of which is the shift of the research focus from the analysis of the text and the ...

The first part of the article introduces a new research program that focuses on the constitutive role of emotions, affect, and their intensity in meaning-making. It opposes the existing broad tradition that effectively posits culture as information and sees cultural processes as coding, transferring, and processing information. I suggest that such a “cybernetic” paradigm of ...

Memorial space of the necropolis. The case of Novodevichy Cemetery
Kucheryavaya M., , in: Death and Events: International Perspectives on Events Marking the End of Life.: L.: Routledge, 2021. Ch. 4 P. 48–62.
In my work I outline a new model of cemetery, drawing on the example of Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. Using the theoretical resources of cultural sociology I will show that the separation of the cemetery as a memorial space and as a tourist space is not limited to one of these models, excluding the rest. ...

This paper focuses on the integrative models of culture and cultural phenomena developed at the intersection of the cognitive and social sciences. It is argued that the leading research program of “cultural neuroscience” rests on the erroneous presuppositions with regard to the nature of cultural phenomena. Two alternative theoretical strategies are subsequently proposed for consideration. ...

Throughout the 20th century, cinema has played, and, to some extent, continues to play a key role in shaping the social imagination and anthropology of modern human. Nevertheless, as a review of English scholarly literature shows, cinema, unlike art and music, remains a marginal subject of analysis for sociologists. The article attempts to consider the ...

Russian Sociological Review: Social Order and Art Sources of Imaginations
Higher School of Economics, National Research University, 2020.
Despite the fact that culture, aesthetics, and art were some of the main concerns of early classical sociology (e.g., Simmel’s essays are probably the most popular reference in this regard), later culture has become a matter of interest of a sub-discipline, that of the sociology of culture. The end of the 20th and the beginning of ...

This analytical overview examines the main understandings of culture in contemporary sociological theory. It attempts to reconstruct the theoretical logic behind the classical functionalist understanding of culture. It is argued that the classical model of culture has its roots in Durkheim’s works on collective representations. It is then explained how Parsons’ interpretation of Durkheim’s theoretical ...

Culture and cognition: The Durkheimian principle of sui generis synthesis vs. cognitive-based models of culture
Kurakin D., American Journal of Cultural Sociology 2020 Vol. 8 No. 1 P. 63–89
Cultural sociology must catch up in taking seriously recent initiatives in the sociology of culture and cognition, represented by the works of Omar Lizardo, John Levi Martin, Stephen Vaisey, and others. However, aiming at progress in cultural analysis, these theories are partly driven by an epistemic logic alien to cultural theorizing, making the very concept ...
