‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Culture as collective resource allocation across life history trade-offs: Commentary on Baumard and André (2025)
Gallyamova A., Dmitry Grigoryev, Evolution and Human Behavior 2025 Vol. 46 No. 6 Article 106748
We discuss a naturalistic yet non-reductionist alternative to Baumard and André’s (2025) account. While their minimalist model helpfully situates culture within evolutionary ecology, it can downplay culture’s own organizing principles and historical dynamics. Building on Berry’s ecocultural perspective, we treat culture as a mediating and regulatory system shaped by ecological constraints yet operating through its ...

The article analyzes the provisions on which Epicurus' doctrine of freedom is based. It is shown that the deviations of atoms, which many researchers consider to be the main argument in defense of freedom in Epicurus, do not prove freedom, but the objectivity of accidents and the probable nature of events. Without denying the influence ...

This paper addresses the issue of accidental stains on textiles as opposed to intentional printing and dyeing practices. The subject of study is individual and collaborative craft design strategies which are centred around the stain and its treatment. The nature and types of stains as well as varied opinions and interpretations that reflect social constructions, norms, and values around ...

Mikirtumov I., Человек 2024 Т. 35 № 6 С. 158–174
The article offers an interpretation of hypothetical necessity, which is important for understanding Aristotle’s future contingent events, based on praxis. For this purpose, the concept of becoming, the ways of expanding knowledge and the consequences for them of incomplete information about the conditions for the occurrence of future contingent events are used. Hypothetical necessity is the ...

Moiseeva A., Философия науки 2018 № 1 (76) С. 71–77
The subject here is a discussion about the ontological status of phenomenal properties (qualia). What we consider is the argumentation in favor of dualism, formulated by D. Chalmers  – the author, known first of all as a philosopher of mind, although he has no less important works on the philosophy of language, – as well ...

Obligations arising as a result of causing harm in the course of a counter-terrorist operation remain poorly studied in the domestic doctrine to a certain extent. Meanwhile, in practice, more and more difficulties arise due to the lack of compensation for causing this kind of harm. The reason for this is the incorrect qualification of ...

Mikirtumov I., Stasis 2022 Т. 13 № 1 С. 38–76
The article attempts to answer the question of the impact of digitalization upon alienation and the differentiation between work and leisure. It contextualizes the concept of alienation from Marx’s economic and philosophical manuscripts, drawing a distinction between the time of work as alienated existence, or necessity, and personal time, as leisure and freedom. Alienation is ...

Sex Differences in Mate Preferences Across 45 Countries: A Large-Scale Replication
Walter K. V., Conroy-Beam D., Buss D. M. et al., Psychological Science 2020 Vol. 31 No. 4 P. 408–423
Considerable research has examined human mate preferences across cultures, finding universal sex differences in preferences for attractiveness and resources as well as sources of systematic cultural variation. Two competing perspectives—an evolutionary psychological perspective and a biosocial role perspective—offer alternative explanations for these findings. However, the original data on which each perspective relies are decades old, ...

Galanova A., Галанов В.
The pricing of goods on the market is influenced by the spontaneously emerging supply and demand. However, the spontaneity of pricing is based on internal laws, primarily on the law of value, which implies that the prices of goods are ultimately governed by the proportions of the distribution of hired labor among the branches of ...

Estimating the index of increase via balancing deterministic and random data
Chen L., Davydov Y., Gribkova N. et al., Mathematical Methods of Statistics 2018 Vol. 27 P. 83–102
We introduce and explore an empirical index of increase that works in both deterministic and random environments, thus allowing to assess monotonicity of functions that are prone to random measurement errors. We prove consistency of the index and show how its rate of convergence is influenced by deterministic and random parts of the data. In ...

Innervation of the lophophore suggests that the phoronid Phoronis ovalis is a link between phoronids and bryozoans
Temereva E., Scientific Reports 2017 Vol. 7 No. 1 P. 1–16
The validity of the Lophophorata as a monophyletic group remains controversial. New data on the innervation of the lophophore, which is a unique feature of the lophophorates, may help clarify the status of the Lophophorata and provide new information on the early evolution of the group. In this paper, the organization of the nervous system of the lophophore ...
