Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

В главе рассматриваются морфологические каузативы горномарийского языка. Показатель ‐ə̑kt, который является единственным продуктивным из всего инвентаря каузативных суффиксов, имеет семантику дистантной каузации и образует моно‐клаузальные дериваты. Кроме того, он может употребляться в одной словоформе дважды. Дериваты с двойным каузативом имеют следующие возможные интерпретации по сравнению с единичным каузативом: дополнительное подсобытие каузации, интенсификация усилий каузатора, итерация событий, ...

The ventive and the deictic shift: The case of Old Assyrian
Sergey Koval, Loesov S., Studies in Language 2025 Vol. 49 No. 1 P. 93–118
The Old Assyrian language is a branch of East Semitic. East Semitic has been extinct since around 400 BCE. The Old Assyrian texts were produced by Assyrian merchants between 1890 and 1860 BCE in Northern Mesopotamia and Central Anatolia. Old Assyrian, as well as most other East Semitic varieties, had a ventive (or cislocative) marker ...

Bribri media tantum verbs and the rise of labile syntax
Pacchiarotti S., Kulikov L., Linguistics 2022 Vol. 60 No. 2 P. 617–657
In this article, we first show that the Bribri (Chibchan) middle voice suffix -r derives passive voice from active transitive and agentive intransitive verbs, as well as anticausative verbs from nominal and adjectival roots. Second, we focus on five media tantum verbs, i.e., forms that synchronically carry the -r suffix and have no counterpart without -r. Unlike ...

Neurophysiological correlates of automatic integration of voice and gender information during grammatical processing.
Maria Alekseeva, Myachykov A., Beatriz Bermudez‑Margaretto et al., Scientific Reports 2022 Vol. 12 Article 13114
During verbal communication, interlocutors rely on both linguistic (e.g., words, syntax) and extralinguistic (e.g., voice quality) information. The neural mechanisms of extralinguistic information processing are particularly poorly understood. To address this, we used EEG and recorded eventrelated brain potentials while participants listened to Russian pronoun–verb phrases presented in either male or female voice. Crucially, we ...

Periphrastic causative in West Circassian
Phelan P. M., Studies in Language 2022
This paper looks at a grammaticalized periphrastic causative construction in West Circassian. West Circassian is a polysynthetic language and expresses information largely through morphological means, which makes this construction all the more unusual. As interest in the complexities of polysynthetic languages grows, it is important to look at periphrastic strategies and syntactic operations in these ...

The paper adresses parallels between tense, aspect and modality marking in Russian embedded clauses. It is widely known that tense forms of embedded verbs can be interpreted relatively or absolutely, and in some cases, the relative and absolute use seem to be in free variation. It turns out that the interpretation of modality and aspect ...

Non-canonical control in Russian converbial clauses
Жукова С. Ю., Zevakhina N., Slioussar N. et al., Russian linguistics 2020 Vol. 44 No. 2 P. 129–143
It has been acknowledged that the null subject of a converbial clause in Russian is canonically controlled by the Nominative subject of a main clause (Nominative subject control). Non-Nominative control has been considered ungrammatical. On the basis of two experiments (acceptability rating and speeded grammaticality judgement tasks) the paper shows that the non-Nominative control (by ...
