Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Hypergraphs from multivariate connectivity: caCOH-based EEG/MEG representation
Vlasenko D., Saranskaia I., Zakharov D., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–16
Hypergraphs provide a natural framework for representing neurophysiological interactions distributed across sets of sensors. A key methodological question is how hyperedges should be defined from frequency-resolved electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) data. We demonstrate a construction strategy in which hyperedges are obtained from canonical coherence (caCOH), an extension of coherence that estimates coupling between multidimensional signal spaces. To ...

Reconstruction of EEG signals using next-generation reservoir computing
Ratnikov F., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–10
EEG recordings are often affected by the loss or corruption of individual channels due to electrode detachment, poor scalp contact, or external interference. Such channels must be accurately reconstructed before further analysis. In this study, we investigate Next-Generation Reservoir Computing (NG-RC) as a data-driven approach for reconstructing corrupted EEG channels and compare its performance with ...

Батарея тестов для картирования речи во время операций на головном мозге «Лингвистическое интраоперационное сопровождение»
Dmitrova E., Буклина С. Б., Gronskaya N. E. et al., Вопросы нейрохирургии им. Н.Н. Бурденко 2026 № 90(4) С. 87–94
Effective intraoperative speech mapping requires specific test with standardized linguistic material. The last one should capture speech function supported by brain region targeted for resection. It is necessary to develop a test tailored to specific patient’s needs and document intraoperative linguistic support. The objective of this report was to describe the procedure of intraoperative speech testing and battery of intraoperative tests for Russian language. We correlated intraoperative tests with brain regions and speech functions, as well as presented an application ...

Functional Brain Connectivity and Musical Training: Insights from EEG Phase Synchronization during Music Perception
Radygina A., Kulikova S., Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences 2025 Vol. 95 No. 6 P. 963–970
Musical training has a significant impact on brain organization, leading to functional and structural adaptations that enhance auditory, visual, motor, and cognitive processes. This study investigates how extensive musical training shapes functional brain connectivity by comparing professional musicians and non-musicians. Using EEG phase-locking value (PLV) analysis, we examined neural synchronization across alpha, beta, and gamma frequency ranges during music ...

Moscow Wada protocol: an optimised protocol for language and memory lateralization
Provlotskaya I., Minnigulova A., Gordeyeva E. et al., Brain Structure and Function 2026 Vol. 231 Article 113
The Wada test is an invasive procedure used to assess language and memory lateralization. Despite the widespread use of the Wada test in the population of people with epilepsy, the two existing standardized protocols for conducting the procedure are methodologically different and do not fully account for language comprehension as a separate domain. In this ...

EEG evidence for reproducible neural states during Buddhist Highest Yoga Tantra meditation
Mikhaylets E. V., Razorenova A. М., Chernyshev V. L. et al., Scientific Reports 2026 Vol. 16 Article 23560
Meditation offers a naturalistic paradigm for studying introspection, yet the neural dynamics of advanced tantric practices remain largely unexplored. Buddhist Highest Yoga Tantra (BHYT) comprises a sequence of eight dissolution stages culminating in the “clear light” state. We recorded EEG during eyes-closed BHYT meditation performed in monasteries and hermitages (51 sessions from 36 male practitioners; ...

WSI-GT: Pseudo-Label Guided Graph Transformer for Whole-Slide Histology
Sun Z., Khvostikov A., Krylov A. et al., Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction 2026 Vol. 8 No. 1 Article 8
Whole-slide histology images (WSIs) can exceed 100 k × 100 k pixels, making direct pixel-level segmentation infeasible and requiring patch-level classification as a practical alternative for downstream WSI segmentation. However, most approaches either treat patches independently, ignoring spatial and biological context, or rely on deep graph models prone to oversmoothing and loss of local tissue ...

Turkina A., Vinogradova O., Lomaia E. et al., Annals of Hematology 2025 Vol. 104 P. 2707–2715
Vamotinib (PF-114) is a 3rd -generation, ATP-competitive oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) active against wild-type and mutated BCR::ABL1 isoforms including BCR::ABL1T315I. We present final results of a phase-1 vamotinib dose-escalation study to identify maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) followed by expansion cohorts. 51 subjects with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) failing ≥ 1 2nd generation TKI or with BCR::ABL1T315I were ...

Effects of childhood institutionalization on semantic processing and its neural correlates persist into adolescence and adulthood
Chinn L., Momotenko D., Сукманова А. А. et al., Cortex 2023 Vol. 161 P. 93–115
Individuals raised in institutionalized care settings are more likely to demonstrate developmental deficits than those raised in biological families. One domain that is vulnerable to the impoverished environments characteristic of some institutionalized care facilities is language development. We used EEG to assess ERPs and source-localized event-related spectral perturbations (ERSPs) associated with semantic processing at different levels of picture-word conflict and low ...

Artificial intelligence framework for multi-pathology risk assessment from retinal fundus images: deep learning approach to 15-disease screening
Vasilev R., Savchenko A., Blinov P. et al., Frontiers in Medicine 2026 Vol. 13 Article 1778404
Automated disease screening systems face challenges when applied to multi-class medical image analysis, particularly under severe class imbalance inherent in clinical datasets. Retinal fundus imaging enables non-invasive screening for multiple ocular and systemic diseases simultaneously, yet current automated systems typically assess risk for only a single pathology or a limited disease range. We developed a ...

Overcoming the Curse of Dimensionality with Synolitic AI
Zaikin A., Sviridov I., Sosedka A. et al., Technologies 2026 Vol. 14 No. 2 Article 84
High-dimensional tabular data are common in biomedical and clinical research, yet conventional machine learning methods often struggle in such settings due to data scarcity, feature redundancy, and limited generalization. In this study, we systematically evaluate Synolitic Graph Neural Networks (SGNNs), a framework that transforms high-dimensional samples into sample-specific graphs by training ensembles of low-dimensional pairwise ...
