Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

‘Speech, Facial Expressions, and Gestures Cannot Lie
Would you like to know whether a speaker’s trembling voice or an accidental gesture can give them away? At HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, researchers are developing an algorithm that analyses speech, facial expressions, and gestures, and determines whether information is truthful with 92% accuracy. The project has applications ranging from forensic examination and bank recruitment to fundamental research. Anna Khomenko, head of the research group and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Language and Brain at the HSE Faculty of Humanities in Nizhny Novgorod, explains how students and researchers are working together to create a corpus of video recordings, train a classifier, and prepare to introduce computer vision technology.

Что такое Свобода? Свобода воли, свободы личности, конституционная модель и законодательное регулирование
Момджян К. Х., Кржевов В. С., Poddiakov A. et al., М.: Новые печатные технологии, 2025.

Does Sound Timing Organization Matter? How Time Interval Influences the Perception of Closely Spaced Frequencies
Liaukovich K., Martynova O., Brain Sciences 2026 Vol. 5 No. 16 P. 439
Highlights What are the main findings? Temporal predictability may enhance auditory frequency discrimination, but only under active listening and when discrimination is difficult; the local irregularity (five-tone bundles) yields higher hit rates and perceptual sensitivity (d’) compared to oddball or two-tone paradigms, accompanied by enhanced P300 amplitude. Participants may show a dissociation between objective performance and subjective awareness: ...

HF Heating Effects as Seen From Below and Above: First Results of Joint SURA–Ionosfera-M Experiment
Chernyshov A., Padokhin A. M., Grach S. M. et al., Geophysical Research Letters 2026 Vol. 53 P. 1–11
This paper presents the first results of a coordinated experiment on the ionospheric plasma response to high-frequency (HF) overdense heating, conducted using the SURA heating facility and the Ionosfera-M satellite. The experiment combined ground-based observations with in situ satellite measurements, enabling a comprehensive study of artificial ionospheric disturbances. During the experiment, the SURA facility transmitted ...

Hectometric Continuum Radiation Observations on Different Temporal Scales in Near-Earth Space
D. A. Dorofeev, A. A. Chernyshov, Mogilevsky M. M. et al., JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH-SPACE PHYSICS 2025 Vol. 130 Article e2025JA033900
This study analyzes data from the ERG (Arase) satellite over a period of nearly 7 years (2017–2023). During this time, about 1,000 cases of hectometric continuum (HMC) radiation in near‐Earth space were detected, which made it possible to identify characteristic features on different time scales. On a daily scale, it was established that HMC is ...

On the nature of hectometric continuum-type emissions in the near-Earth plasma
Mogilevsky M. M., Shaposhnikov V., Chernyshov A. et al., Physics of Plasmas 2025 Vol. 32 P. 1–10
The ERG (Arase) satellite recently discovered a non-thermal hectometric continuum with a narrowband frequency structure. The mechanism behind the generation of this type of emission in the near-Earth plasma is still unknown. This study examines the potential use of electron cyclotron harmonics instability to explain the line structure of hectometric radio emissions for the first ...

On calibration of remote sensing retrievals of ecosystem respiration (Reco) with tower measurements over,Russian forests and wetlands
Shabanov N., Kuricheva O., Kurbatova J. et al., / Series Working Papers SSRN "Department of Economics Ca’ Foscari University of Venice". 2026.
The carbon balance of an ecosystem is the difference between Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and Ecosystem Respiration (Reco) as expressed by Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE). While remote sensing retrievals of GPP have reached maturity, Reco estimation remains underexplored and ultimately cast bias on NEE. Here we present an end-to-end multi-scale analysis of the mechanism of ...

Updating legacy soil map reveals spatial soil-class probabilities
Gorbacheva A., Krenke A., Puzachenko M. et al., Geoderma Regional 2026 Vol. 46 Article e01124
Legacy soil maps remain essential for national land-use planning. However, their thematic accuracy and spatial resolution are often insufficient for contemporary applications requiring reliable estimates. This study presents a digital soil-mapping approach to update legacy soil information without extensive field sampling, demonstrated for arable lands in the Republic of Tatarstan (4.5 million ha). The proposed ...

Reconstruction of EEG signals using next-generation reservoir computing
Badarin A., Ratnikov F., Andreev A., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–10
EEG recordings are often affected by the loss or corruption of individual channels due to electrode detachment, poor scalp contact, or external interference. Such channels must be accurately reconstructed before further analysis. In this study, we investigate Next-Generation Reservoir Computing (NG-RC) as a data-driven approach for reconstructing corrupted EEG channels and compare its performance with ...

A pangenome reference overcomes the inherent limitation of any individual reference genome by integrating the variation present in a population. We present the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium’s (HPRC) Release 2 (HPRC2), an openly available, second phase pangenome that is an approximately fivefold expansion in genome number over HPRC Release 1 (HPRC1) and measurable improvement in ...

Assessing walkability and climate adaptive capacity in relation to urban morphology and historical development
Shartova N., Mironova E., Geo Journal 2026 Vol. 91 Article 78
The historical timeline of urban development profoundly shapes the contemporary form and functionality of cities. Traditionally, cities were planned with limited consideration for the promotion of a healthy urban environment. Using Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, a city that has evolved from a medieval market town to an industrial centre and later into a multifunctional city with ...

Structure of the Obligate Heterodimer of the IHF Protein in Solution and in the Crystal
Dadinova L., Petoukhov M., Mozhaev A. et al., Crystallography Reports 2026 Vol. 71 P. 52–58
Bacterial chromosomes are tightly packed in the cells due to interactions with specific nucleoid-associated proteins. Among them, the IHF protein draws attention due to its presumed influence on intracellular crystallization processes, leading to bacterial resistance to drugs. The crystal structure of the IHF heterodimer is known only in complex with a short DNA fragment, whereas ...
