The author analyses the system of untrivial Turkic causatives represented in 12 modern languages. He proposes to interpretate the modern multiplity of the causative systems as a development from the Proto‑Turkic situation based on a distribution of two types of verbal stems and the phonetic structure of the stem endings. ...

For a long time one of the most bewildering conundrums of Indo-European linguistics has been the issue of how to reconstruct the alignment system of this ancient language state, given the lack of distinction between S and O marking in the Proto-Indo-European neuters nouns and the problem of the Hittite ergative. An additional complication stems ...

The article describes a fragment of the work process of an automatic parser for Literary Khakass. It analyzes data using “synthesis”, i. e., through multiPLe straight and reverse passes that check various hypotheses. The article describes the transformation of a morphophonological transcription of a word-form into an orthographic one. Literary Khakass is not very normative ...

Since the earliest studies on the Soqotri language (Modern South Arabian branch, Semitic family), it has been observed that a non-etymological h (labeled 'parasite h') often appears before the last vowel of nominal bases in some slots of their paradigm. Until now, the 'parasite h' has been thought to be related to vowel length (etymological or secondary). In the ...

East Caucasian relative clause constructions (RCCs) are thought by some to be constructed mainly on the basis of semantic and pragmatic information and not to elaborate on the syntax of the relative clause. In this paper, we consider RCCs in one of the East Caucasian languages, namely Mehweb Dargwa, and argue that, despite the fact ...

In Dargwa languages, which constitute a branch of the Northeast Caucasian language family, certain nominal attributes may be either marked with a dedicated attributive suffix or appear without it. Morphophonological alternations can make target-like production of grammatical morphemes challenging due to changes in form depending on the phonological environment. This article explores the acquisition of morphophonological alternations involving the interacting patterns of vowel deletion and stress shift in Russian-speaking children (aged 4;0–7;11) using a ‘wug’ test with real and nonce words. Depending on the ...

What is the relationship between morphological variation and change on the one hand and meaning on the other? It has often been pointed out that when languages develop variants through historical change, the variants often acquire different meanings. In this paper, I consider the syntactic property of the Mehweb predicative marker gʷa. This is a particle that serves as a finite predicate, supplementing the auxiliary in periphrastic form - a phenomenon attested in a number of East Caucasian languages. What is less common - or at least less documented - are the rules ...

According to a hypothesis put forward by E. A. Helimski, the paradigmatic alternation of root vowels (ablaut) in Khanty results from the influence of second syllable vowels, themselves partially lost already in Proto-Khanty. Helimski’s internal reconstruction of these vowels – ablaut triggers *I, *II, *U and *AA – is convincing, but their Uralic origins remain ...

The paper presents a description and a discussion of adnominal possessive constructions in Tanti Dargwa, a Northeast Caucasian language spoken in Daghestan. First, Tanti Dargwa manifests a ...

Background: Five-year-olds with specific language impairment (SLI) often struggle with mastering grammatical morphemes. It has been proposed that verbal morphology is particularly problematic in this respect. Previous research has also shown that in young typically developing children grammatical markers appear later in more phonologically challenging contexts.
Aims: The main aim was to explore whether grammatical ...
