HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

This article examines the syntax of constructions with aspectual verbs in Sakha (a.k.a. Yakut). Such constructions contain two predicates: a lexical verb which is a converb, and a finite aspectual verb that conveys some grammatical meaning. The syntax of such constructions has already been studied for some other Turkic languages. The pre‑ sent research examines ...

Russian neologism verb’s prefixes: Against the semantic invariants approach
Bubnov G., RHEMA. РЕМА 2024 No. 4 P. 42–66
In this paper, the hypothesis of semantic invariants, which claims that the selection of natural telicizer prefixes depends on the semantics of the verb, is refuted based on verbs derived from English loanwords. The data from neologism verbs, collected through a Google Forms survey, demonstrate the existence of a universal natural telicizer prefix za-, the ...

This article deals with Japanese resultatives in terms of the degree of prototypical agentive characteristics expressed by their participants. Such semantic pairing makes it possible to compare aspectual verb constructions with different ...

Teasing apart time reference-related encoding and retrieval deficits in aphasia: evidence from Greek, Russian, Italian and English
Fyndanis V., Burgio F., Buivolova O. et al., Aphasiology 2025 Vol. 39 No. 9 P. 1242–1276
Background Persons with aphasia (PWAs) are often impaired in time reference/tense production. It has been suggested that this impairment is due to encoding or/and retrieval deficits. However, to the best of our knowledge, no experimental design that enables teasing apart selective encoding and retrieval deficits has been proposed thus far. Aims This study aims at disentangling time reference-related ...

Aspect and subjectivity in the modal readings of tenses in Russian
Trnavac R., Leiden Papers in Linguistics 2006 Vol. 3 No. 1 P. 51–73
In the aspectual linguistic literature, a connection between imperfective aspect and modality/subjectivity is quite often mentioned. This article investigates a possible counterargument to this connection by analyzing modal readings of tenses in Russian. Two types of uses of tenses are described: (1) temporal reading of the tense with a modal inference and (2) strictly modal ...

Aspect and subjectivity in modal constructions
Trnavac Radoslava, Utrecht: LOT, 2006.
This books deals with the interaction of aspect and subjectivity in modal constructions. In the linguistic literature dealing with the connection between aspect and modality, a link has often been observed between imperfective aspect and modal readings (Townsend 1979, Caenepeel 1989, Fleischman 1995, Smith 1997, Boogaart 1999, 2006, Ippolito 2004, Giannakidou & Zwarts, to appear). Introduction: the role of the lexicon in actionality
Crane T. M., Nichols J., Persohn B., STUF - Language Typology and Universals 2021 Vol. 74 No. 3-4 P. 427–434
Actionality (also referred to by labels such as “lexical aspect” or “aktionsart”) is the semantic dimension that encodes the constituent phases and boundaries of situations. Despite its central role in aspectual interpretation, careful language-specific descriptions and typological surveys of actional systems have been rare thus far. In this introduction, we describe the steps that lead ...

К семантической типологии проспектива
Kozlov A., Вопросы языкознания 2021 № 2 С. 28–52
Цель этой статьи — очертить путь семантического развития проспективной конструкции. В структуре значения новорожденного проспектива есть подготовительное состояние, которое обладает всеми обычными для состояния свойствами. По мере дальнейшего семантического развития оно теряет салиентность, а событие, следующее за временем ассерции, наоборот, приобретает ее. Финальным результатом такого развития обычно бывает показатель будущего времени, вовсе не содержащий в ...

The topic of the paper is the semantics of semelfactive and delimitative in a typological perspective. We describe in detail how semantic behavior of these derivations depends on the actional type of the verbal stem. We propose to analyse semelfactive as a situation of minimal duration and delimitative as a non-final portion of a situation. ...
