Resource Race and Green Transition: Three Unexpected Conclusions from Foresight Centres Research on Climate and Poverty
Beneath the surface of green energy—which most people associate with solar panels, electric vehicles, and reduced CO2 emissions—lies a complex web of geopolitical interests, international inequality, and resource constraints. Researchers from the Laboratory for Science and Technology Studies (LST) at the HSE ISSEK Foresight Centre have published a series of articles in leading international journals on hidden and overt conflicts surrounding critically important metals and minerals, as well as related processes in the energy sector.

Immersion in Second Language Environment Influences Bilinguals Perception of Emotions
Researchers at the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre at the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have discovered how bilingual individuals process emotional words in their native (first) and non-native (second) languages. It was found that the link between word meaning and bodily sensations is weaker in a second language than in a first language. However, the more a person is immersed in a language environment, the smaller this difference becomes. The article has been published in Language, Cognition and Neuroscience.

Using the visual world paradigm to study retrieval interference in spoken language comprehension

Frontiers in Psychology. 2016.
Sekerina I. A., Campanelli L., Van Dyke J. A.

The cue-based retrieval theory (Lewis et al., 2006) predicts that interference from similar distractors should create difficulty for argument integration, however this hypothesis has only been examined in the written modality. The current study uses the Visual World Paradigm (VWP) to assess its feasibility to study retrieval interference arising from distractors present in a visual display during spoken language comprehension. The study aims to extend findings from Van Dyke and McElree (2006), which utilized a dual-task paradigm with written sentences in which they manipulated the relationship between extra-sentential distractors and the semantic retrieval cues from a verb, to the spoken modality. Results indicate that retrieval interference effects do occur in the spoken modality, manifesting immediately upon encountering the verbal retrieval cue for inaccurate trials when the distractors are present in the visual field. We also observed indicators of repair processes in trials containing semantic distractors, which were ultimately answered correctly. We conclude that the VWP is a useful tool for investigating retrieval interference effects, including both the online effects of distractors and their after-effects, when repair is initiated. This work paves the way for further studies of retrieval interference in the spoken modality, which is especially significant for examining the phenomenon in pre-reading children, non-reading adults (e.g., people with aphasia), and spoken language bilinguals. © 2016 Sekerina, Campanelli and Van Dyke.

Metaphor in the Mental Lexicon: Investigating Different Types of Polysemy via Eye-Tracking and Behavioral Experiments
Valentina Apresjan, Alexander V. Orlov, Koncha K. et al., Metaphor and Symbol 2026 Vol. 41 No. 1 P. 5–38
This study investigates the mental representation and processing of the two types of metaphorical senses in Russian polysemous verbs and adjectives using eye-tracking, sensicality judgment, and semantic clustering tasks. The metaphorical senses under study differ in their semantic proximity to the literal sense, with “proximal” metaphors (e.g. “raise prices”) retaining more semantic components, and “distal” ...

The effect of the global language context on bilingual language control during L1 reading
Parshina O., Smirnova A., Goldina S. et al., Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 2025 Vol. 28 No. 2 P. 577–587
The proactive gain control hypothesis suggests that the global language context regulates lexical access to the bilinguals’ languages during reading. Specifically, with increasing exposure to non-target language cues, bilinguals adjust the lexical activation to allow non-target language access from the earliest word recognition stages. Using the invisible boundary paradigm, we examined the flow of lexical activation in ...

Horizontal mapping of time-related words in first and second language
Malyshevskaya A., Fischer M., Shtyrov Y. et al., Scientific Reports 2024 Vol. 14 No. 1 Article 9675
The existence of a consistent horizontal spatial-conceptual mapping for words denoting time is a well-established phenomenon. For example, words related to the past or future (e.g., yesterday/tomorrow) facilitate respective leftward/rightward attentional shifts and responses, suggesting the visual-spatial grounding of temporal semantics, at least in the native language (L1). To examine whether similar horizontal bias also accompanies access ...

Lexical and perceptual biases in speakers’ syntactic choices
Myachykov A., Scheepers C., Discourse Processes 2024 P. 1–10
Russell Tomlin’s groundbreaking work laid a foundation for the explorations of the interplay between linguistic and nonlinguistic factors determining structural choice during sentence production. The present article investigates the interplay between two such factors, lexical priming and visual cueing, which may prioritize a particular referent of an event for privileged subject status within a sentence. To this end, ...

Karliukova A., Abutalebi J., Shtyrov Y. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2025 Vol. 22 No. 2 P. 362–375
Sensorimotor embodiment of emotional semantic representations in the second language (L2) has been largely studied through behavioral paradigms. However, most neuroscience research of embodied semantics has almost exclusively focused on the native language (L1). The representational architecture of emotive con cepts (e.g., love, hate) in L2 has been explored from the neurocognitive per spective to ...

Принимая во внимание ограничения рабочей памяти, была разработана теория когнитивной нагрузки, служащая цели облегчить мультимедийное обучение, сделать его более эффективным, и поэтому предлагающая конкретные практические рекомендации для образования. Одним из ключевых постулатов данной теории является существование трех типов когнитивной ...

Development of the perceptual span in Russian-speaking children
Staroverova V., Lopukhina A., , in: 11th Novi Sad Workshop on Psycholinguistic, Neurolinguistic and Clinical Linguistic Research, Novi Sad, April 20, 2024 : Book of abstracts.: Novi Sad: Faculty of Philosophy, University of Novi Sad, 2024. P. 19–20.
Perceptual span is the amount of information that readers can perceive within one fixation (Rayner, 1975). It develops with age and reaches the size of 3 symbols to the left and 14 symbols to the right of the fixation point for skilled readers in alphabetical languages (Rayner, 2009). Our study is the first to assess ...
