Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Fair Division: How Mathematics Helps to Divide the Indivisible
How can items be allocated among participants so that no one feels short-changed? Alexander Karpov, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and his Singaporean colleague, Prof. Warut Suksompong, set out to find a mathematical answer to this question. In this interview, they discuss how a model of rational preferences is constructed, why one cannot rely on a simple sum of values, and where an algorithm that asks a minimal number of questions can be useful.

Electronics of the Future: Why Superconductors and Spintronics Work Together
It was once believed that superconductivity and magnetism avoided each other like the devil avoids holy water. However, modern nanostructures prove the opposite. A Russian theoretical physicist and Indian experimentalists have joined forces to create the electronics of the future—free from energy losses. Nataliya Pugach, Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering at HSE MIEM and Leading Research Fellow at the Quantum Nanoelectronics Laboratory, explains how a long-standing acquaintance in Cambridge grew into a mirror laboratory project with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), how superconducting spintronics works, and what surprises a researcher in India beyond the university campus.

Arutiunian V., Buyanova I., Minnigulova A. et al., Cerebral Cortex 2025 Vol. 35 No. 3 Article bhaf055
Low-level auditory processing difficulties have been previously reported in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and some studies showed the relationship between these difficulties in the primary auditory cortex and language impairment in ASD. However, there is still a limited number of studies that comprehensively assess (i) amplitudes, latencies, and sensory gating effects in all ...

The left pars triangularis lesions impair semantic interference resolution regardless of competitor modality
Zyryanov A., Buivolova O., Dragoy O. et al., Cerebral Cortex 2025 Vol. 35 No. 8 Article bhaf215
When we speak, selecting the right word takes longer whenever its semantic associates become active simultaneously. Although such semantic interference (SI) activates the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG), its lesions do not systematically increase SI induced by written word distractors. Therefore, whether the LIFG plays a causal role in resolving SI remains an open question. ...

The Rapid Automatized Naming test (RAN) is widely used in research practice for many European languages. It involves processes such as phonological and orthographic processing, symbol recognition, and articulation. As these processes are also involved in reading, RAN results correlate with reading skills in primary school children and predict reading proficiency in preschoolers. Despite the ...

Effects of Visual Priming and Event Orientation on Word Order Choice in Russian Sentence Production
Pokhoday M., Shtyrov Y., Myachykov A., Frontiers in Psychology 2019 Vol. 10 No. 1661 P. 1–8
Existing research shows that distribution of the speaker’s attention among event’s protagonists affects syntactic choice during sentence production. One of the debated issues concerns the extent of the attentional contribution to syntactic choice in languages that put stronger emphasis on word order arrangement rather than the choice of the overall syntactic frame. To address this, ...

Investigating Comprehension of Nouns and Verbs: Is There a Difference?
Soloukhina O., Ivanova M., Aphasiology 2018 Vol. 2 No. 32 P. 183–203
Background: There is growing evidence that verbs are often more difficult to process than nouns and that verb retrieval is more commonly affected in aphasia. However, existing observations are largely based on naming and semantic judgment tasks. The extent to which this processing difficulty is modality-general has yet to be established. In addition, most of ...

There is growing evidence that verbs are more difficult to processes than nouns (Cappa & Perani, 2002) and that verb retrieval is more commonly affected in aphasia compared to nouns (Jonkers & Bastiaanse, 1998). However, existing observations are largely based on naming and semantic judgment tasks. We investigate whether this processing difficulty is modality general. ...
