Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

The Will to Labor: A Conceptual History of the Will in the Stakhanovite Movement and Stalinist Ideology
Young P. I., Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History 2025 Vol. 26 No. 2 P. 269–296
This article integrates an examination of major philosophies of the will, their interpretations by Bolshevik theorists, and their manifestations in the Stakhanovite movement. Through empirical analysis, it has distilled three major non-Marxist philosophical currents in the discourse on the Stakhanovite movement: Nietzsche’s will to power, Kant’s will as practical reason, and Rousseau’s general will. Each ...

Social Control under Stalin and Khrushchev: The Phantom of a Well-Ordered State
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2023.
In this book, the contributors examine how social control developed under Stalin and Khrushchev. Drawing on deep archival research from across the former Soviet Union, they analyse the wide network of state institutions that were used for regulating individual behaviour and how Soviet citizens interacted with them. Together they show that social control in the ...

In this text, the authors debate the research carried out by D. Khristenko on early Soviet rural healthcare, questioning the trustworthiness of the sources, their interpretation, and the historical and biographical context of the narrative. The authors provide statistics that recorded a reduction in the Soviet healthcare system’s ability to treat the population. They analyse ...

Gab es eine „politische Ökonomie des sozialistischen Realismus“? Die Basis des stalinistischen Kulturmanagements und der Überbau der „sowjetischen Oper“ am Beispiel des Moskauer Bolschoi-Theaters (1930er Jahre)
Golovlev A., Themenportal Europäische Geschichte 2022 P. 1–16
In this essay, theatre management and economic structure in the Bolshoi Theatre are investigated, firstly as elements of Stalinist cultural policies, and secondly as an expression of the Bolshoi’s institutional and economic subjectivity. Promoted to the stage of “Soviet opera”, and failing this task, the house nevertheless developed a highly functional and numerically efficient economy, ...

Impossible rehabilitation - The 1956 revision commissions and the uncertainties of the thaw
Elie M., Osteuropa 2007 Vol. 57 No. 6 P. 369–386
On the periphery of the XXth Party Congress in 1956, Khrushchev introduced revision commissions. These were to review in decentralised fashion the countless prisoners in custody who were innocent. The commissions fulfilled their tasks only conditionally. They may have released a large number of prisoners, but they rehabilitated only very few. The members of the ...

Elie M., H-Soz-Kult 2019 No. 2
On a famous poster from 1949, Stalin bends over a map of the Soviet Union representing the South-East of the country criss-crossed with gigantic shelterbelts. Dressed in full Generalissimo apparel, smoking the pipe and holding a pen to correct the map, the dictator displays the perspicacious smile of a sage who knows that the future ...

Les revenants
Elie M., L’HISTOIRE 2019 No. 461-462 P. 84–89

Stalin: Paradoxes of Power, 1878-1928
Kotkin S., L.: Penguin Books, 2015.
The product of a decade of intrepid research, Stalin is a landmark achievement. Stephen Kotkin offers a biography that, at long last, is equal to this shrewd, sociopathic, charismatic dictator in all his dimensions. We see a man inclined to despotism who could be utterly charming; a pragmatic ideologue; a leader who obsessed over slights yet was ...

Vishlenkova E. A., Zatravkin S., Шерстнева Е. В., Quaestio Rossica 2020 Т. 8 № 2 С. 652–666
Analyzing the medical statistics from Russian archives and political speeches of medical administrators of the 1930s, the authors of the article found a health care reform – dramatically different from post-revolutionary epoch complex of measures for soviet medicine conversion. The reform was ideologically justified and consistently conducted in the USSR from 1930 to 1941. During ...
