The article deals with different priorities of economic activities in the Arctic. The role and the place of extractive industry in different countries are analysed. It is shown that the main emphasis in the modern Arctic economic is shifted to socio-economic return not only economic efficiency of projects itself. To be leader in Arctic development means not to implement ambitious projects but provides solutions in line with the sustainable functioning of the fragile and unique environment of “high latitudes”.
