How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Sokolov B., Zavadskaya M., Полис. Политические исследования 2023 № 4 С. 152–167
The article explores how the individual experience of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic affected the attitudes of Russians towards the country’s political system. Specifically, we use data from an online survey conducted in mid-June 2020 as part of the international research project ‘Values in Crisis’. The sample size is 1,527 respondents. The sample is representative in ...

Sokolov B., Zavadskaya M., Chmel K., Политическая наука 2022 № 2 С. 122–143
How the COVID-19 pandemic affected the attitudes of Russians towards political institutions? The aggregate data of public opinion polls suggest that, according to various available indicators, the level of political support in Russia has slightly dropped, compared to the pre-pandemic period. Yet, this kind of data does not allow one to infer what aspects of ...

Sokolov B., Zavadskaya M., Камалов Э. А., Политическая наука 2021 № 2 С. 73–104
Any country in order to stay afloat sooner or later is forced to undertake large-scale internal reforms in various policy areas. However, structural reforms often bear adverse consequences for the population. As the studies of the  US and European states show, one of the most crucial negative consequences is the decrease in mass support for  the ...

Voting retrospectively: Critical junctures and party identification
Arbatli C. E., Gomtsyan D., European Economic Review 2019 Vol. 119 P. 356–390
This paper provides evidence for retrospective voting in the very long-term by exploiting a unique quasi-natural experiment of history. We trace the origins of party identification to a critical juncture in the local history of Sasun, a mountainous region of the Ottoman Empire located in Eastern Turkey. Sasun received vital support from the Armenian Revolutionary ...

Циклически сбалансированные траектории в модели экономического роста с эндогенным переключением политики
Akhremenko A. S., Petrov A., Математическое моделирование 2018 Т. 30 № 4 С. 3–20
Balanced growth paths are typical research subjects for models of macroeconomic dynamics. Balanced growth paths are model solutions that assume constant policy parameters (such as tax rate) and allow for monotonous and proportional growth of model components. In this paper, we construct and test a model with policy switching based on economic retrospective voting: the ...

Cyclically Balanced Growth Paths in a Model of Economic Growth with Endogenous Policy Switching
Akhremenko A. S., Petrov A., Yureskul E., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series WP BRP "Economics/EC". 2015. No. 109/EC/2015.
This paper deals with a model of economic growth, which we expand to include endogenous policy switching based on retrospective voting. It is shown that under certain conditions the solution has a special form that we call a cyclically balanced growth path. This type of solution is an analogue to balanced growth paths, which often ...
