Un classico ritrovamento della psicologia della memoria è l '"effetto serial posizione". Immediato rievocazione libera di un elenco di parole è più efficiente per gli elementi presentati presto (effetto primato) o in ritardo (effetto attualità), rispetto a quelli in mezzo. In un design a blocchi randomizzati evento-correlati, abbiamo interferito con la codifica di parole non collegate liste con brevi treni di ripetitivi TMS (TMS), applicato coincidenza con la presentazione acustica di ogni parola verso sinistra dorsolaterale pFC, il lobo intraparietale sinistro, e un sito di controllo (vertice). Interferenza di rTMS con codifica prodotto una netta doppia dissociazione sulla precisione durante immediato rievocazione libera. L'effetto primato è selettivamente aggravata dalla rTMS della dorsolaterale pFC, mentre attualità è stata selettivamente aggravata dalla rTMS del lobo intraparietale. Questi risultati sono in accordo con la doppia dissociazione tra breve termine e memoria a lungo termine osservato in pazienti neuropsicologici e fornire prove dirette di distinti meccanismi corticali di codifica nel cervello umano.
