When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Emotions towards algorithmic policy decision-making: direct and compensatory associations with trust in governance
Vigoda-Gadot E., Levitats Z., Styrin E. M., Asia Pacific Journal of Public Administration 2026 P. 1–23
Governance is rapidly digitising, yet how citizens’ emotions towards algorithmic policy decision-making relate to their trust in governance institutions remains understudied. Drawing on the affect-as-information model, we argue that emotions constitute a distinct input into institutional trust judgements, operating both directly and by conditioning the weight of cognitive evaluations. We test this argument with a ...

Vorchik A., / SSRN. Серия Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026.
This work is devoted to a theoretical explanation of the Easterlin paradox, according to which long-term economic growth does not make average level of people's happiness increasing. We propose an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that integrates insights from political science, public administration, organizational theory, economics, psychology, sociology, and cognitive science to better understand the role of emotions in governance in the digital age. We argue that citizens' sentiments and emotional responses are central to their relationships with government institutions and bureaucracies. Building on bounded ...

Facial obstructions and baseline correction shape affective computing’s detection of emotion–behavior relationships
Shepelenko A., Kosonogov V., Shestakova A., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1713462
Introduction:  Affective computing (AC) is increasingly used to study emotional processes underlying decision-making, yet its methodological validity in capturing spontaneous emotional responses and their behavioral relevance remains debated. In particular, it is unclear how facial obstructions and baseline correction affect the accuracy of AC-based facial emotion measures in capturing emotion–behavior relationships. Methods:  The predictive validity of AC-based facial ...

Emotions in Meaning-Making: Toward a Sociological Theory of Cathexis
Kurakin D., Sociological forum 2025 P. 1–12
The role of emotion in meaning-making remains undertheorized in cultural sociology. This article argues that emotions and affect are intrinsic to meaning-making and proposes cathexis—the attachment of emotions generated in social interaction to objects, symbols, and ideas—as the fundamental mechanism by which emotions co-constitute cultural meanings. Durkheim implied this constitutive role of affect in his theory ...

To test a person's psycho-emotional state, various methods are used, one of which is a reaction to an emotional video sequence. Such a reaction can make it possible to assess the degree of a person's involvement in certain emotional events. However, there are few methods to assess psycho-emotional status objectively. One of the sensitive markers ...
