Personal Interest in Doctoral Thesis Topic Most Important for Confidence in Successful Defence
A researcher at HSE University analysed data on 1,539 doctoral students from 161 Russian universities to identify which features of a thesis topic are associated with academic success and engagement. The most important factor was found to be personal interest in the research topic, which was associated with almost all key aspects of doctoral programme experience—from engaging with the academic supervisor to research activity and confidence about successfully defending the thesis. The findings have been published in Higher Education.

Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

Pulsed laser attack at 1061nm potentially compromises quantum key distribution
Ponosova A., Zhluktova I., Ruzhitskaya D. et al., Applied Physics Letters 2025 Vol. 127 No. 19 P. 194002
Quantum key distribution systems offer cryptographic security, provided that all their components are thoroughly characterized. However, certain components might be vulnerable to laser-damage attacks, particularly when subjected to untested laser parameters. Here, we show that exposing 1550-nm fiber-optic isolators to 1061-nm sub-nanosecond pulsed illumination with 1.16 W average power permanently degrades their isolation performance at ...

On the impossibility of an invariant attack on Kuznyechik
Fomin D., Journal of Computer Virology and Hacking Techniques 2022 Vol. 18 P. 61–67
Currently numerous cryptographic systems are based on SP-networks. These primitives are supposed to be secure but recent investigations show that some attacks are possible. The aim of this work is to study how secure the Russian standardized block cipher Kuznyechik over invariant attacks. We study the already known decompositions of its permutation and show the ...

Применение статистических тестов NIST для анализа выходных последовательностей блочных шифров
Perov A., Научный вестник Новосибирского государственного технического университета 2019 Т. 76 № 3 С. 87–96
Modern iterative block ciphers are one of the most popular methods for providing a secure information exchange in internet networks. A widespread use of this technology and the development of computing power give rise to a whole list of threats to cryptanalysis of ciphers. Ensuring cryptographic security is in this case one of the key ...

Using Machine Learning Technologies for Carrying out Statistical Analysis of Block Ciphers
Perov A., Conference: 2019 International Multi-Conference on Engineering, Computer and Information Sciences (SIBIRCON) 2019 P. 851–854
This article presents the application of machine learning technologies to cryptography tasks, in particular, the statistical analysis of block ciphers. The author uses the Inception V3 neural network model, which is traditionally used for images recognition. A technology for adapting ciphertexts to the developed technique is proposed. The results of experiments on encrypted sequences are ...

Modification of the Key Schedule of the 2-GOST Block Cipher and its Implementation on FPGA
Chukhno A., Дмух А. А., Journal of Computer Virology and Hacking Techniques 2022 Vol. 18 No. 1 P. 49–59
For 2-GOST block lightweight cipher we will consider the Ashur-Bar-On-Dunkelman attack, show that its time complexity is underestimated and propose a modification of this attack with lower time and memory complexity (2 2.49 and 2 6.15 times smaller respectively). A new key schedule for 2-GOST will be proposed to counteract attacks using key schedule features such as fixed points, ...

О способе построения дифференциально 2δ-равномерных подстановок на F_{2^{2m}}
Fomin D., Прикладная дискретная математика. Приложение 2021 № 14 С. 51–55
The paper studies new ways of con- structing differentially 2δ-uniform bijections over F_{2^{2m}} , m≥3, that are based on TU-construction. Some well known results on the constructing differentially 4-uniform permutations over F_{2^{2m}} are generalized in this work. The core idea is to use TU-construction and differentially δ-uniform bijections to construct 2^t · δ-uniform permutations. A generalized method for constructing 2m-bit differentially 4-uniform permutations ...

Авраамова О. Д., Fomin D., Серов В. А. et al., Математические вопросы криптографии 2021 Vol. 12 No. 2 P. 21–38
In this paper we consider a bit-sliced implementation of the non-linear transformation shared by GOST R 34.12-2015 “Kuznyechik” block cipher and GOST R 34.11-2012 “Streebog” hash function. We combine analytical and computer methods to get a 226 Boolean operations representation. ...

Algebras of Bernoulli Distributions with a Single Limit Point
Yashunsky A., Moscow University Mathematics Bulletin 2019 Vol. 74 No. 4 P. 135–140
Systems of Boolean functions inducing algebras of Bernoulli distributions whose universal set has a single limit point are considered. A criterion for an algebra generated by a given distributions set to have a single limit point is proved. ...

Mobile Social Networking Under Side-Channel Attacks: Practical Security Challenges
Ometov A., Levina A., Borisenko P. et al., IEEE Access 2017 No. 5 P. 2591–2601
Mobile social networks (MSNs) are the networks of individuals with similar interests connected to each other through their mobile devices. Recently, MSNs are proliferating fast supported by emerging wireless technologies that allow to achieve more efficient communication and better networking performance across the key parameters, such as lower delay, higher data rate, and better coverage. ...
