When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Effects of nonlinearity and a new nonlinear resonance in two-path phonon transmittance in lattices with two-dimensional arrays of atomic defects
I. P. Koroleva (Kikot), Kosevich Y. A., Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 5 Article 054217
The paper is devoted to analytical and numerical studies of the effects of nonlinearity on the two-path phonon interference in the transmission through two-dimensional arrays of atomic defects embedded in a lattice. The emergence of transmission antiresonance (transmission node) in the two-path system is demonstrated for the few-particle nanostructures, which allow us to model both linear and nonlinear ...

Об эвристическом алгоритме построения подстановок с заданными криптографическими характеристиками с использованием обобщённой конструкции
М. А. Коврижных, Д. Б. Фомин, Прикладная дискретная математика 2022 № 57 С. 5–21
In this paper, we study a generalized construction of (2m, 2m)-functions using monomial and arbitrary m-bit permutations as constituent elements. We investigate the possibility of constructing bijective vectorial Boolean functions (permutations) with specified cryptographic properties that ensure the resistance of encryption algorithms to linear and differential methods of cryptographic analysis. We propose a heuristic algorithm ...

Profile of a two-dimensional vortex condensate beyond the universal limit
Parfenyev V., Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics 2022 Vol. 106 No. 2 Article 025102
It is well known that an inverse turbulent cascade in a finite ($2 \pi \times 2 \pi$) two-dimensional periodic domain leads to the emergence of a system-sized coherent vortex dipole. We report a numerical hyperviscous study of the spatial vorticity profile inside one of the vortices. The exciting force was shortly correlated in time, random ...

Об эвристическом подходе к построению биективных векторных булевых функций с заданными криптографическими характеристиками
Коврижных М. А., Fomin D., Прикладная дискретная математика. Приложение 2021 № 14 С. 181–184
Bijective vector Boolean functions (permuta- tions) are used as nonlinear primitives of many symmetric ciphers. In this paper, we study a generalized construction of (2m, 2m)-functions using monomial and arbitrary m-bit per- mutations as constituent elements. A heuristic algorithm for obtaining bijective Boolean functions with given nonlinearity and differential uniformity, based on this construction, is proposed. For ...

We propose the Modified Economic Complexity Index (MECI) as a possible refinement to two relevant complexity measures: the Economic Complexity index (ECI) and the Fitness and Complexity index (FCI). Both ECI and FCI are used for the evaluation of competitive advantages and growth potentials of countries. ECI and FCI assume bipartite countrynetwork data, whereas MECI provides an ecosystem-based design ...
