‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

LetterShip: a serious mobile game for teaching children to read

P. 1–8.
Natalia Logvinova, Dorofeeva S., Zontov Y., Uvarova E., Sergeeva E., Vishnyakov Y., Sannikov A., Kazakov A., Dragoy O.

Reading is a complex cognitive process essential for academic success and cultural access. Difficulties in reading can severely impact literacy and well-being. However, most serious games designed to help children at risk focus narrowly on phonological skills, neglecting visual and higher-order linguistic components. This paper introduces LetterShip, a serious game designed to provide comprehensive reading support by addressing the wide spectrum of processes underlying reading. The game features a two-stage architecture: Stage One builds foundational skills through visual, auditory, and multimodal training; Stage Two progresses from words to sentences, incorporating vocabulary, morphology, and syntax. A dynamic adaptive algorithm personalizes difficulty in real time based on the player’s performance, while all linguistic stimuli are systematically calibrated using psycholinguistic parameters. LetterShip provides a reading tool designed to be accessible without a prior diagnosis for typical learners and children with or at risk for dyslexia.

Automatic detection of dyslexia based on eye movements during reading in Russian
Laurinavichyute A., Lopukhina A., Reich D., , in: Proceedings of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational LinguisticsVol. 2: Short papers.: Wien: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2025. P. 59–66.
Dyslexia, a common learning disability, requires an early diagnosis. However, current screening tests are very time- and resourceconsuming. We present an LSTM that aims to automatically classify dyslexia based on eye movements recorded during natural reading combined with basic demographic information and linguistic features. The proposed model reaches an AUC of 0.93 and outperforms the ...

Alexeeva S. V., Zubov V., Nikonova Y., , in: Psychological Applications Conference and Trends (InPACT 2022).: inScience Press, 2022. P. 464–468.
The LexiaD font was developed for Russian-speaking people with reading disorders (dyslexia) (Alexeeva et al., 2020). LexiaD demonstrated an advantage in letter feature extraction and information integration over other modern Cyrillic fonts (PT Sans and PT Serif) while reading by primary school dyslexic and non-dyslexic children. However, for dyslexic and non-dyslexic adolescents, the familiar Arial font was more effective ...
