HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Automatic detection of dyslexia based on eye movements during reading in Russian
Laurinavichyute A., Lopukhina A., Reich D., , in: Proceedings of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational LinguisticsVol. 2: Short papers.: Wien: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2025. P. 59–66.
Dyslexia, a common learning disability, requires an early diagnosis. However, current screening tests are very time- and resourceconsuming. We present an LSTM that aims to automatically classify dyslexia based on eye movements recorded during natural reading combined with basic demographic information and linguistic features. The proposed model reaches an AUC of 0.93 and outperforms the ...

Phonological processing skills influence text-reading fluency in Russian-speaking adolescents
Eremicheva T., Nikonova Y., Alexeeva S. V., Plos One 2025 Vol. 20 No. 12 Article e0337614
It is widely acknowledged that phonological processing skills are crucial for reading acquisition. While most research has focused on examining phonological processing in children, adolescents have remained underexplored. The present study aimed to assess phonological processing (PP) skills in Russian-speaking adolescents using the Changing Sound in Pseudoword test from the Russian Test of Phonological Processing ...

Mechanisms of Dyslexia Development: Overview of the Hypotheses Based on the Experimental Studies
S. V. Dorofeeva, Human Physiology (международный журнал издательства Pleiades Publishing) 2025 Vol. 51 No. 4 P. 432–439
Specific reading disabilities (dyslexia) are a widespread problem: from 5 to 20% of the population in different countries suffer from this impairment according to the research. For effective planning of intervention programs for people with dyslexia, it is necessary to take into account a wide range of possible causes of impairment of complex reading skills. Around the world, ...

Dorofeeva S., Физиология человека 2025 Т. 51 № 4 С. 142–153
Specific reading impairments (developmental dyslexia) is a widespread problem: according to recent studies, from five to twenty percent of the population in different countries suffer from this impairment. Effective planning of the intervention programs for people with dyslexia requires taking into account a wide range of possible causes of impairment of complex reading skills. Experimental ...

LexiaD, the first dyslexia-specific Cyrillic font compared to the popular Times New Roman and Roboto fonts when read by adults
Alexeeva S. V., Zubov V., Nikonova Y., , in: Psychological Applications Conference and Trends (InPACT 2022).: inScience Press, 2022. P. 464–468.
The LexiaD font was developed for Russian-speaking people with reading disorders (dyslexia) (Alexeeva et al., 2020). LexiaD demonstrated an advantage in letter feature extraction and information integration over other modern Cyrillic fonts (PT Sans and PT Serif) while reading by primary school dyslexic and non-dyslexic children. However, for dyslexic and non-dyslexic adolescents, the familiar Arial font was more effective ...

Диагностика дислексии с использованием методов искусственного интеллекта по данным движений глаз: обзор
Gracheva M., Shalileh S., Клиническая и специальная психология 2023 Т. 12 № 3 С. 1–29
The review considers methods of dyslexia diagnostics based on eye movement data and implemented on the basis of artificial intelligence. A number of studies have shown that eye movements in people with dyslexia may differ from those of people with normal reading abilities. Since 2015, studies have begun to appear in which the eye movements ...

Own-race and other-race face recognition problems without visual expertise problems in dyslexic readers
Sigurdardottir H. M., Hjartarson K. H., Gudmundsson G. L. et al., Vision Research 2019 Vol. 158 P. 146–156
Both intact and deficient neural processing of faces has been found in dyslexic readers. Similarly, behavioral studies have shown both normal and abnormal face processing in developmental dyslexia. We tested whether dyslexic adults are impaired in tests of own-race and other-race face recognition. As both face and word recognition rely considerably on visual expertise, we ...

Specific problems in visual cognition of dyslexic readers: Face discrimination deficits predict dyslexia over and above discrimination of scrambled faces and novel objects.
Kristjansson A., Sigurdardottir H. M., Fridriksdottir L. E. et al., Cognition 2018 Vol. 175 P. 157–168
Evidence of interdependencies of face and word processing mechanisms suggest possible links between reading problems and abnormal face processing. In two experiments we assessed such high-level visual deficits in people with a history of reading problems. Experiment 1 showed that people who were worse at face matching had greater reading problems. In experiment 2, matched ...

Default stress assignment in Russian: evidence from acquired surface dyslexia
Mołczanow J., Iskra E., Dragoy O. et al., Phonology 2019 Vol. 36 No. 1 P. 61–90
This paper re-examines theoretical constructs used in the analysis of Russian word stress employing data from speakers with acquired surface dyslexia, a symptom which is characterized by an impaired lexical access and preserved grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules. Russian stems have been traditionally analysed as lexically accented or unaccented, with a default rule deriving surface stress in ...

Language and speech are an integral part of people’s thinking and communication, but recently there has been an increase in the number of children with speech difficulties. The article focuses on the experience of successful dyslexia and dysgraphia correction of 10-year-old Russian speaking child. The correction program consisted of two stages. The first stage is ...
