'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

On the Matchings-Jack and Hypermap-Jack Conjectures for Labelled Matchings and Star Hypermaps

Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. 2024. Vol. 31. No. 3. Article P3.6.
Kanunnikov A., Valentin V.Promyslov, Vassilieva E.

Introduced by Goulden and Jackson in their 1996 paper, the matchings-Jack conjecture and the hypermap-Jack conjecture (also known as the b-conjecture) are two major open questions relating Jack symmetric functions, the representation theory of the symmetric groups and combinatorial maps. They show that the coefficients in the power sum expansion of some Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions and in the logarithm of the same sum interpolate respectively between the structure constants of the class algebra and the double coset algebra of the symmetric group and between the numbers of orientable and locally orientable hypermaps. They further provide some evidence that these two families of coefficients indexed by three partitions of a given intege n and the Jack parameter αare polynomials in β=α−1 with non-negative integer coefficients of combinatorial significance. This paper is devoted to the case when one of the three partitions is equal to (n). We exhibit some polynomial properties of both families of coefficients and prove a variation of the hypermap-Jack conjecture and the matchings-Jack conjecture involving labelled hypermaps and matchings in some important cases.

An infinite series of Gorenstein local algebras failing the affine homogeneity property
Avdeev R., Zaitseva Y., Mediterranean Journal of Mathematics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 7 Article 224
We provide an infinite series of commutative finite-dimensional Gorenstein local algebras A_n for n ≥ 2. We give an elementary proof that the maximal ideal of every algebra A_n possesses a one-dimensional subspace that is different from the socle and invariant under the automorphism group of A_n. The latter implies that the algebras A_n fail ...

Turbulent Exchange Tensor in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer: An Inverse-Problem Approach Using Radiosonde Wind Observations with High Vertical Resolution
Gordin V. A., Efremenko D., Boundary-Layer Meteorology 2026 Vol. 192 No. 51
An inverse problem of reconstructing the turbulent exchange tensor from large archives of observed wind profiles within the Åkerblom–Ekman (A-E) model framework is investigated using high-vertical-resolution radiosonde observations. The reconstructed tensor provides improved agreement between modeled and observed wind profiles compared to classical formulations based on real turbulent exchange coefficient. Instead of the classical A-E ...

Kuznetsov A. P., Sedova Y. V., Stankevich N., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 12 Article 119309
We analyze the interaction of a quasi-periodic subsystem, in which two-, three-, and four- frequency quasi-periodic oscillations are possible, with a chaotic subsystem. A discrete version is obtained via the Euler scheme from the corresponding flow model. The dynamics of individual subsystems are discussed, including quasi-periodic bifurcations of invariant tori and the occur rence of ...

Gusein-Zade S., Campillo A., Delgado F., Mathematische Zeitschrift 2026 Vol. 314 No. 1 P. 1–22
For a subfield $\K$ of the field $\C$ of complex numbers, we consider curve and divisorial valuations on the algebra $\K[[x,y]]$ of formal power series in two variables with the coefficients in $\K$. We compute the semigroup Poincar\'e series and the classical Poincar\'e series of a (discrete, rank one) valuation on it. ...

Wave scattering by a sloping beach of an arbitrary angle. Revisited: regular solution
Mishuris G., Meylan M. H., Pelinovsky E., Journal of Fluid Mechanics 2026 Vol. 1045 Article A4
In this paper, we revisit the classic problem of a wave field on a sloping beach of an arbitrary angle and propose a general approach that allows the computation of regular solutions of the problem regardless of the angle. We use the Mellin-transform technique, reducing the problem to singular integral equations with fixed-point singularities of ...

Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 2 Article 119245
This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

A polynomial-time algorithm recognizing exact cubes of trees
Beaudou L., Echeverría H., Foucaud F. et al., Procedia Computer Science 2025 Vol. 273 P. 86–93
We prove that the recognition of exact cubes of trees can be done in polynomial time. More precisely, the exact distance power of a graph is a refinement of the more usual notion of graph power. Given a graph G and a positive integer p, the exact distance pth power of G is the graph G#p on the same vertex set where two vertices ...

Let G = (V,E) be an undirected graph, T ⊆ V be a set of terminals. Then a natural combinatorial problem consists in finding the maximum number of vertex-disjoint paths connecting distinct terminals. For this problem, a clever construction suggested by Gallai reduces it to computing a maximum non-bipartite matching and thus gives an O ( m ...
