'Physics Is What the World Is Literally Built On'
Physicist Nina Dzhanayeva, recipient of a Vladimir Potanin Foundation scholarship, focuses her research on nanophotonics. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses nanowells, scientific intuition, and how physics can help in making frangipane cream puffs.

Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Wireless Integration of Fiber Optic Vibration Sensor

P. 17–20.
Maxim S. Akatov, Aleksander L. Tuv, Dmitry I. Godyno, Arseny D. Beglov, Alina A. Opekunova

The  article  discusses  approaches  to  integrating
Internet  of  Things  (IoT)  technologies  into  a  fiber-optic
vibration  sensor  (FOVS).  The  paper  examines  modern
technologies  for  wireless  data  transmission  that  allow
expanding the possibilities of using such a sensor. The benefits
of  wireless  connectivity  are  analyzed,  including  efficient,
flexible  and  scalable  monitoring,  which  improves  production
processes and increases the reliability of equipment operation.
The paper discusses the connection scheme, the algorithm for
processing the information received from the sensor, as well as
the protocols for transmitting and processing data.

Development of a Digital Twin of a Fiber-Optic Linear Motion Sensor
Tuv A., Artemy M. Sheynkin, Akatov M. et al., , in: 2025 International Russian Automation Conference (RusAutoCon).: IEEE, 2025. P. 607–612.
All stages of the life cycle (LC) of a product can be accompanied using a digital twin, the functionality of which depends on the stage of LC. The digital twin concept is especially relevant for complex multicomponent structures, as well as for products with expensive components or materials, where minimizing errors and possible defects of ...

Kirill Tomyshev, Dolzhenko E., Ilya D. Golubev et al., IEEE Sensors Journal 2024 Vol. 24 No. 23 P. 38996–39001
Fiber optic technologies are currently one of the most actively developing areas of modern applied science. Every year, a large number of papers devoted to the research and development of fiber lasers and sensor devices for a wide range of applications are being published. The key elements of many modern fiber devices and related research ...

Analysis of Parameters of Optical Linear Displacement Transducer with Open Channel
Akatov Maxim S., Safonov Sergey N., Tuv Alexander L., , in: Proceedings of the 2020 IEEE International Conference "Quality Management, Transport and Information Security, Information Technologies" (IT&QM&IS).: IEEE, 2020. Ch. 6 P. 170–172.
This article describes the structure and principle of operation of the optical linear displacement sensor with open optical channel. Scope of application in industrial equipment for measuring vibration parameters is determined. Analysis of errors caused by external illumination of the optical channel and a change in the reflection coefficient of the object surface is accomplished. ...
