Опущение предлогов в русской речи хантыйских и мансийских билингвов: корпусное исследование
In this paper, we present a corpus-based study of preposition drop (p-drop) in the speech of Khanty-
Russian and Mansi-Russian bilinguals. We created a database of contexts with prepositional phrases
based on data from spoken corpora and annotated it for the following features: presence/absence of
a preposition, the first sound of the following word, and the frequency of the noun-preposition
combination. We also included sociolinguistic data (each speaker’s age and education level).
We analyzed the preposition v ('in') using a mixed-effects logistic regression model and found that
the first sound of the next word is a statistically significant factor for the omission of v. In other
words, the probability of p-drop increases if the following word begins with a labial consonant.
Phonetic interference with L1s can explain the preposition drop in Khanty and Mansi Russian:
phonetic constraints on consonant clusters at the beginning of a word are present in both Khanty
and Mansi.
There are also a few contexts in which we hypothesize morphosyntactic interference, but such
examples are scarce. According to our results, neither the case of the noun (locative vs accusative)
nor the speaker’s L1 was statistically significant, nor was the frequency of the preposition-noun
combination. Nevertheless, we discuss these results in the article and propose a possible explanation
for the non-significant results, as they may be relevant for further research on preposition drop.
