In recent decades, researchers have been (re)discovering the surface not as a passive shell, but as a
site of contact, eventfulness, and crystallization of human-world relations. Bringing together bodies,
environment, and the contact between them, the surface can be understood as a materialization of
the enactive approach, for which cognition and life are mutual specification and co-evolution of the
human being and the environment. Asking the question of alternative modes of existence,
enactivists rely on engaged contact, plasticity and groundlessness, the holding of heterogeneity, and
the intensification of presence through attention to bodily experience and the dynamics of the
surrounding environment. Turning to the surface as a site for imagining new relations with the
world, we focus on one of the fundamental ways of working with the surface — the layer — which
has been (re)activated in the digital age. The layer allows for the destabilization of phenomena, the
creation of mobile non-hierarchical assemblages, and the play of overlays: it can both complicate
presence and become an instrument of control and power. Drawing on the enactive triad of "body-
environment-active action; we structure our analysis along these three vectors and demonstrate how
artists imagine and defend alternative relations with the world through body, environment, and
action: artists insist on embodied existence where medicine anonymizes the body; destabilize
historical narratives and; animatet; the archive; bring the periphery of the exhibition space back into
focus. We will also outline the contexts in which different regimes of artistic; layeredness emerge
and show how the (re)activation of the layer is connected to the digital revolution.
