‘Our Team Consists of True Leaders in Their Respective Academic Disciplines
The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

International N5 Symposium ‘Neural Networks and Nonlinearity in Nizhny Novgorod Brings Together Scientists from Russia and Serbia
The International N5 Symposium ‘Neural Networks and Nonlinearity in Nizhny Novgorod’ was held at the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists from September 23 to 26. The event was organised by HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists, with the participation of Sberbank and the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The symposium was held for the second time: the first conference took place in 2025 and attracted considerable interest from the academic community.

Анализ деловой неопределенности с помощью LC-кривых

Вопросы экономики. 2025. № 11. С. 143–157.
Алескеров Ф. Т., Lola I. S., Asoskov D., Забелина Д. А., Назарова Р. Д.

The LC-curve method, a new approach to time series analysis, was applied to the composite Business Uncertainty Index (BUI), based on the results of regular Rosstat business surveys, which made it possible to analyze uncertainty trajectories across Russia's enlarged industries and sub-sectors using two index specifications: ex-ante (forecast) and ex-post (actual). The results of the empirical analysis for the period 2020-2024 have shown the high sensitivity of LC-curves to shocks of the business environment, their relevance for assessing the stages of business activity in various industries. Thus, both crisis periods included in the time interval of the study, namely 2020 and 2022, were successfully identified in the dynamics of the plotted curves, and it was shown that the pandemic had a more serious negative impact. At the same time, according to their forecast dynamics, in 2025 the industry will enter a phase of slowing growth. Special attention is paid to the analysis of medium-high and high-tech industries, among which the industries that demonstrate the greatest stability and potentially play a key role in the structural transformation of the economy are highlighted.

De Gruyter Handbook of Eurasian Societies
De Gruyter, 2026.
Post-Soviet Eurasia is one of the world's most geopolitically consequential and rapidly transforming regions. Developments across it increasingly reshape political, economic and social relations far beyond its borders. Understanding these dynamics is therefore both intellectually urgent and analytically demanding, requiring an interdisciplinary approach capable of moving beyond established categories and fragmented national perspectives. This handbook provides ...

Inflation and economic growth in Russia: searching for the optimal level
Demidova O., Kazakova S., Applied Economics 2026 P. 1–14
This paper examines the nonlinear relationship between inflation and economic growth across Russian regions, contributing to the literature on the inflation-growth nexus by using subnational evidence from a large and economically heterogeneous country. Using panel data for 83 regions over the period 2015–2023, we estimate fixed-effects models with a quadratic specification of inflation. The growth-maximizing ...

Bounds on the derivatives of the log-cumulative distribution function of the multivariate normal distribution
Potanin B., Dolgikh S., Statistics and Probability Letters 2027 Article 110984
We derive bounds on the gradient and Hessian of the log-CDF, ln F(x), of the multivariate normal distribution. These bounds scale linearly and quadratically in ‖x‖ , respectively, with constants depending only on the covariance matrix. We demonstrate the usefulness of these bounds by proving asymptotic normality of the maximum-likelihood estimator of the multivariate probit ...

Subsidy Effects on Productivity and Technical Efficiency of Corporate Dairy Farms in the Russian Federation
Nikulina Y., Jamali Jaghdani T., Götz L. et al., / Series "Working Papers". 2026.
The impact of state subsidies on Russia's post-Soviet dairy output remains controversial; this study provides an empirical analysis of that relationship. Using an unbalanced panel dataset of 123 dairy enterprises in the Leningrad Region spanning the period from 2010 to 2023, we employ stochastic frontier analysis to assess these relationships. The results indicate that subsidies ...

Kapeliushnikov R., / Высшая школа экономики. Серия WP3 "Проблемы рынка труда". 2026. № WP3/2026/02.
The paper is the first attempt in the Russian literature to assess returns to platform employment in the Russian labor market. The theory offers no clear predictions regarding its impact on workers’ earnings: there might be both a premium and a penalty. We distinguish three groups of workers: employees; self-employed using internet-platforms; self-employed not using ...

Statistical Anomaly Detection Using LC-Curves: An Application to Geophysical Time Series
Aleskerov F. T., Kosychev A., , in: Computational Science and Its Applications – ICCSA 2026 Workshops* 9.: Springer, 2027. P. 384–392.
We adapt the Life Cycle (LC) curve methodology to the problem of statistical anomaly detection in time series. LC-curves transform a raw non-negative time series into a cumulative share profile that highlights when, within a fixed observation window, most of the signal intensity is concentrated. Deviations of this profile from the uniform-accumulation baseline serve as ...

Detecting the Future: All-at-Once Event Sequence Forecasting with Horizon Matching
Karpukhin I., Savchenko A., , in: Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence. AAAI-26: AAAI Technical Track on Planning, Routing, and Scheduling; AAAI Technical Track on Reasoning under Uncertainty; AAAI Technical Track on Search and Optimization. Main Track, volume 40 no. 43.: American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Press, 2026. P. 22536–22544.
Long-horizon events forecasting is a crucial task across various domains, including retail, finance, healthcare, and social networks. Traditional models for event sequences often extend to forecasting on a horizon using an  autoregressive (recursive) multi-step strategy, which has limited effectiveness due to typical convergence to constant or repetitive outputs. To address this limitation, we introduce DEF, a novel approach for simultaneous forecasting of ...

Online Neural Networks for Change-Point Detection
Hushchyn M., Arzymatov K., Derkach D., Machine Learning 2026 Vol. 115 Article 56
Moments when a time series changes its behavior are called change points. Occurrence of change point implies that the state of the system is altered and its timely detection might help to prevent unwanted consequences. In this paper, we present two change-point detection approaches based on neural networks and online learning. These algorithms demonstrate linear ...

This paper investigates the problem of detecting slow refrigerant leaks in a data center cooling system using a graph neural network. The study addresses the challenge of early fault identification, proposing a method for constructing a topological graph based on the engineering diagram, the physical layout, and the cause-and-effect relationships in the cooling system. This ...

SensorDBSCAN: Semi-Supervised Active Learning Powered Method for Anomaly Detection and Diagnosis
Ivanov P., Shtark M., Kozhevnikov A. et al., IEEE Access 2025 Vol. 13 P. 25186–25197
Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) is a critical challenge in industrial processes aimed at minimizing risks such as safety hazards, costly downtime, and suboptimal production. Traditional supervised FDD methods offer great performance while heavily relying on large volumes of labeled data, whereas unsupervised methods do not depend on labeled data, though are inferior in performance ...
