Современный преподаватель высшей школы как профессия и призвание
The paper presents the first results of a large-scale study about professional strategies of higher education teaching staff in Russia. The research project has been conducted since 2023 as part of the mirror laboratory "Professional Strategies of Higher Education Teachers in Modern Russia". Based on the mass survey data, the authors analyses the relationship between the personal (personal) professional strategies of Russian higher education teachers and the structure of their competences (professional, personal, communicative, informational). Teachers' personal strategies and the set of their competences are the result of personal choice based on professional goals. Within the framework of the neo-Weberian tradition, all strategies were categorized as goal-rational or value-rational types. The study found that most strategies are indeed goal-rational (a teaching professional acting sufficiently to meet the requirements of the system, but no more than that). It also found that groups of personal goal-rational strategies were negatively related to the level of competencies (especially professional and digital competencies). An additional predictor of high competence deficits was the level of mobility.
The results of the study open a discussion on the "balance" of "vocation" and rational professional activity among higher education teaching staff. Those teachers who have a vocation are more professional than those for whom it is "just a profession".
