This monograph has been prepared by the Institute for Applied Political Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) and is based on a series of field expeditions conducted in 2022 under the project “Models of Local Identity and the Socio-Political Practices of Russian Youth.” The study focuses on young people aged 22 to 35 in four regions of Russia: Pskov Oblast, the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Chelyabinsk Oblast, and Kamchatka Krai. The research design employs the “long table” method and draws on I.E. Shteinberg’s “eight-window” sampling model. Over 450 in-depth interviews were conducted during the expeditions, involving a diverse range of respondents with different migration attitudes – including those wishing to leave, to remain, to return to the region, or to move there from elsewhere — as well as experts in the field of youth policy. The monograph explores how local identity and migration attitudes among young people coexist, intersect, and at times conflict with one another. The book is addressed to professionals in the fi eld of youth policy, sociologists, political scientists, and demographers as well as anyone engaged with issues of local identity and youth (out)migration from Russia’s regions.
