«Желая отпраздновать день основания университета общестуденческим танцевальным вечером…». Сценарий согласования студенческих балов Московского университета (1873–1881)
The article reconstructs the scenario for coordinating student balls held on Tatiana’s Day in the 1873–1881. While student balls have previously come to the attention of historians, they were never the subject of a dedicated study. Coordinating a student ball required approval at multiple levels. This was caused by, firstly, conflicting regulations on entertainment events in imperial and departmental legislation, and secondly, the unique, non- standard nature of the event, which had to be greenlit by officials from several different ministries (the Ministry of Public Education, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Ministry of the Imperial Court). The study’s sources include the administrative records of the Imperial Moscow University, the Trustee of the Moscow Education District, the Moscow Governor General, the Moscow Chief of Police, and the Moscow Noble Deputy Assembly (stored at the Central State Archive of Moscow), the Department of Public Education (stored at the Russian State Historical Archive), and the Office of the Imperial Moscow Theaters (stored at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art). The study uses historical research methods and classical source analysis techniques. The article provides a detailed reconstruction of how bureaucrats from different departments coordinated the first student ball in 1872–1873, and identifies and traces the trend towards establishing a more simplified routine for coordinating the subsequent eight balls, held from 1874 to 1881.
