The book by the famous Japanese scholar Alexander Meshcheryakov is a continuation of his intellectual bestseller “Emperor Meiji and His Japan.” It is dedicated to the dramatic period of Japanese history in the first half of the 20th century, when the country was rapidly sliding into the abyss of totalitarianism. The wars that Japan waged at that time brought untold disasters both to the Japanese themselves and to the inhabitants of other countries. The author reveals the managerial and, in particular, cultural mechanisms that made it possible to mobilize the masses with unprecedented success. He tries to understand what it meant to be Japanese at that time and what the appeal of the country’s chosen path was for him. The focus is on such important issues as the attitude of the Japanese to their body and spirit, to old age and youth, life and death, to themselves and others.
