Resource Race and Green Transition: Three Unexpected Conclusions from Foresight Centres Research on Climate and Poverty
Beneath the surface of green energy—which most people associate with solar panels, electric vehicles, and reduced CO2 emissions—lies a complex web of geopolitical interests, international inequality, and resource constraints. Researchers from the Laboratory for Science and Technology Studies (LST) at the HSE ISSEK Foresight Centre have published a series of articles in leading international journals on hidden and overt conflicts surrounding critically important metals and minerals, as well as related processes in the energy sector.

Immersion in Second Language Environment Influences Bilinguals Perception of Emotions
Researchers at the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre at the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have discovered how bilingual individuals process emotional words in their native (first) and non-native (second) languages. It was found that the link between word meaning and bodily sensations is weaker in a second language than in a first language. However, the more a person is immersed in a language environment, the smaller this difference becomes. The article has been published in Language, Cognition and Neuroscience.

Imidazole-4-N-acetamide Derivatives as a Novel Scaffold for Selective Targeting of Cyclin Dependent Kinases
Rusina P., Gandalipov E., Abdyusheva Y. et al., Cancers 2023 Vol. 15 No. 15 Article 3766
General toxicity for the organism is a major drawback of anticancer drugs. Development of new generation chemotherapeutics requires the knowledge about macromolecules critical for tumor cell viability. Among these species (called therapeutic targets), the protein kinases are the established enzymes. However, the parts of protein kinases that are supposed to be targeted by drugs can ...

ELOVL5 and IGFBP6 genes modulate sensitivity of breast cancer cells to ferroptosis
Nikulin S., Razumovskaya A., Poloznikov A. et al., Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences 2023 Vol. 10 Article 1075704
Relapse of breast cancer is one of the key obstacles to successful treatment. Previously we have shown that low expression of ELOVL5 and IGFBP6 genes in breast cancer tissue corresponded to poor prognosis. ELOVL5 participates directly in the elongation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that are considered to play an important role in cancer cell metabolism. Thus, in this work we ...

Fra-2 overexpression upregulates pro-metastatic cell-adhesion molecules, promotes pulmonary metastasis, and reduces survival in a spontaneous xenograft model of human breast cancer
Arnold S., Cortland J., Maltseva D. et al., Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology 2021 Vol. 148 No. 6 P. 1525–1542
Purpose: The transcription factor Fra-2 affects the invasive potential of breast cancer cells by dysregulating adhesion molecules in vitro. Previous results suggested that it upregulates the expression of E- and P-selectin ligands. Such selectin ligands are important members of the leukocyte adhesion cascade, which govern the adhesion and transmigration of cancer cells into the stroma of ...
