«Потуже затянуть пояса»: антикризисная политика правительства Г. Папандреу в Греции (октябрь 2009 — ноябрь 2011 г.)
The issue of excessive foreign debt has existed in Greece for most of the country’s modern history. The issue gained new importance after Greece joined the European monetary union and became especially pronounced during the global financial crisis of the 2010s, during which the country faced bankruptcy several times.
The socialist government led by G. Papandreou which came into power in 2009 initiated a number of anti-crisis policies. However, as a result of both internal and external circumstances, it was unable to refinance the country’s international debt, so Greece was forced to ask other Eurozone members and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance. The Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2010 between the Greek government and the IMF, the European Commission, and the European Central Bank (the trio that would soon be referred to as the “troika” of creditors) was the logical conclusion of the anti-crisis policies of the Papandreou administration and a pivotal moment in the history of modern Greece.
