Representation of the Post-Soviet Countries in the Global Online Information Space in 2020–2021: Frequency of Mention, Media Dynamics, Mood Characteristics
The chapter contains results of a study of the representation of 19 post-Soviet countries and territories on the global Internet in 2020–2021. It was carried out with the help of the FACTIVA monitoring database (information texts, over 23000 online resources from more than 100 countries in 26 languages). It turned out that in 2020–2021 only Russia, the leader in the number of mentions, and Ukraine, included in the top 20 most frequently mentioned states at the global level. The study introduced the concepts of “global media explosion” and “global media storm”. The strongest global media storms on the post-Soviet space were associated with the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh in September–November 2020, with presidential and parliamentary elections in Abkhazia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova.
