Granularity shifting: Experimental evidence from numerals
MIT (Cambridge, USA)
,
2014.
No. 68.
Sassoon G., Zevakhina N.
The paper presents an experimental evidence for Lewis’s (1979) constraints on granularity shifting, Krifka’s (2007) representation of granularity in numerals, and its extension to adjectives. Thus, it supports the view that general principles govern the setting of a granularity level and its shifting within discourse in different domains of grammar, including simple and complex numerals and unmodified and modified adjectives.

Uncontroversially, the meaning of first and second person pronouns and “imposters”, i.e. expressions like yours truly, (Collins and Postal 2012), should be indexical (Kaplan 1977/1989, Stalnaker 1970), but how exactly this indexicality is achieved has been a matter of some debate. While not settling the debate, this paper aims to show that there is no ...

In a variety of languages, plural DPs like books systematically show non-singularity inferences
in some contexts, but not in others.
Competition-based theories of plurality derive non-singularity inferences from reasoning about
the meaning of the plural form against its singular alternative (Sauerland, 2003; Spector, 2007;
Zweig, 2009). A parallel claim has been made about the meaning of singular DPs { in ...

Following a recent discussion in Fox and Spector 2018, this paper provides an argument for a
particular view of the theory of scalar implicatures and exhaustification where exhaustification
is only allowed if it alters the overall sentence meaning without weakening it.
I show that this idea is helpful to make sense of the so-called dependent plural imterpreta
tions, addressed ...

We present experimental evidence showing that there is considerable variation between the rates at which scalar expressions from different lexical scales give rise to upper-bounded construals. We investigated two factors that might explain the variation between scalar expressions: first, the availability of the lexical scales, which we measured on the basis of association strength, grammatical ...
