This collection marks the first Russian-language publication of the political works of Leopold von Ranke (1795–1886), the founder of the German historical school and modern scientific historiography. In "The Great Powers," Ranke formulates a theory of a multipolar world and the international balance of power, drawing on the history of modern Europe. His essay "On the Influence of Theory" is one of the thinker's key texts; it examines the relationship between science and practical politics. In "Political Dialogue," the German historian expounds on his conception of the nature of the state and political power. Ranke's ideas, formulated in these texts, remain relevant today, as they are widely represented in various versions of modern political theory and international relations theory.
