The geographical location of Saint-Petersburg and the history of its creation contributed to significant urbanization and economic growth of both the city itself and suburban areas. The article provides a retrospective look at the formation of the natural and economic system of the Saint-Petersburg agglomeration, assesses the current situation related to water resources, air quality, problems of waste disposal and the elimination of accumulated environmental damage.
It is shown that the St. Petersburg agglomeration is a multifunctional natural and economic system (with various environmental factors of development) requiring new approaches to development, considering the modern socio-economic development of the city.
