At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Comparison of the Quality of Robust PCA versions in the Reducion of datasets with Outliers

P. 1–5.
Goryainov V. B., E. R. Goryainova

The paper considers PCA modifications based on
robust estimates of correlation matrices of observed multivariate
correlated indicators. Based on simulated and real socio-economic
data, the robust versions of the PCA were compared with
the traditional version. A higher quality of robust PCA is
demonstrated when observations contain outliers or have heavytailed
distributions.

А., Bocharova A., Stukal D., Политическая наука 2024 № 2 С. 262–281
The potential of a state in developing its “soft power” is an important component in assessing its state capacity. A nation’s “soft power” not only refers to its external attractiveness and informal influence on decisions made by other international actors, but also serves as an important indicator of a country's potential to affect the formation ...

Goryainov V. B., Goryainova E. R.,
The paper considers the problem of reducing multidimensional correlated indicators. One of the approaches to solving this problem is based on the method of principal components, which makes it possible to compactly describe the vector with correlated coordinates (components) using the principal components vector with uncorrelated coordinates of much smaller dimension, while retaining most of the information about correlation structure of the original ...

Financial Inclusion in Turkey: Unpacking the Provincial Inequality and its Determinants
Takmaz S., Sarı E., Sedat Alataş, Applied Economics Letters 2022
This paper investigates the regional disparity of financial inclusion (FI) and its determinants in Turkey from 2004 to 2020. To this end, we first construct a FI index using the principal component analysis. Then, based on the club convergence approach, we test the existence of convergence to show regional disparities in FI. Finally, we examine the main determinants ...

Dubrova T. A., Ермолина А. С. 98–105.
Comparison of the characteristics of innovative activity of domestic small enterprises with similar indicators of foreign countries indicates that at present in Russia the potential of small business in the innovation sphere is not sufficiently realized. This is indicated by the results of the comparison with EU countries that have a high level of small ...

Comparative Analysis of Robust and Classical Methods for Estimating the Parameters of a Threshold Autoregression Equation
Goryainov V. B., Goryainova E. R., Automation and Remote Control 2019 Vol. 80 No. 4 P. 666–675
Using computer simulation and a study of the asymptotic distribution, we consider the relative efficiency of M-estimates for the coefficients of the threshold autoregressive equation with respect to the least squares and least absolute deviation  estimates. We assume that the updating sequence of the autoregressive equation can have Student’s, logistic, double exponential, normal, or contaminated ...

Goryainova E. R., Goryainov V. B.,
The article deals with constructing the sign test for the hypothesis about the order of equation in moving average. We found the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics which appeared to be the central X-2-distribution under the null hypothesis and the noncentral X-2-distribution under the alternative one. Knowing the asymptotic distribution makes it possible to calculate the asymptotic relative efficiency of the ...

Comparison of efficiency of estimates by the methods of least absolute deviations and least squares in the autoregression model with random coefficient
Goryainov A. V., Goryainova E. R., Automation and Remote Control 2016 Vol. 77 No. 9 P. 1579–1588
For the model of autoregression with a random coefficient, the estimate by the least absolute deviations (LAD) method was proved to be consistent and asymptotically normal. For the asymptotic relative efficiency of the estimate by the LAD method as compared to the least squares method, an analytical expression was obtained. For the case where the ...

Dimensionality reduction for the analysis of brain oscillations
Haufe S., Dähne S., Nikulin V., Neuroimage 2014 No. 101 P. 583–597
Neuronal oscillations have been shown to be associated with perceptual, motor and cognitive brain operations. While complex spatio-temporal dynamics are a hallmark of neuronal oscillations, they also represent a formidable challenge for the proper extraction and quantification of oscillatory activity with non-invasive recording techniques such as EEG and MEG. In order to facilitate the study ...
