From an associate to a manager: Making a promotion decision
In mid-July 2020, Pietr had to make a difficult decision regarding who to promote to lead the marketing department at EnglishLab, a private company that provides tutoring services in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He had two capable but very different candidates in mind: Ana and Elena. The two women had different skills, experiences, and personalities. Neither of them had ever held a managerial position. He was under time constraints to make a decision because the second half of August was typically the best time to recruit new clients and renew contracts with existing clients, who were finishing their summer vacations. A new manager had to get the marketing department up to speed for the upcoming season. This case invites students to discuss both candidates in terms of their potential to become a first-time manager and help Pietr to make a decision.
