Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

Куда уходят депозиты: перераспределение ликвидности и устойчивость фондирования
Anikeev K., AlterEconomics (ранее - Журнал экономической теории) 2026 Т. 23 № 2 С. 410–428
This study empirically tests the deposit channel hypothesis, which holds that increases in deposit markups cause liquidity outflows from the banking sector and a contraction in credit supply. The central question is whether deposit substitution effects, whereby depositors shift funds to other financial instruments during monetary tightening, are reflected in banks’ balance sheets and aggregate ...

Financial literacy and over-indebtedness: Is there a relationship?
Kuzina O. E., Моисеева Д. В., Абдураманов А. Я., Russian Journal of Economics 2026 Vol. 2 No. 12 P. 251–273
This paper assesses the relationship between financial literacy and over-indebtedness of Russian households using panel data from the Survey of Consumer Finances collected in Russia during 2018–2024. Russia is an interesting case: a relatively young consumer-finance market in which a lack of financial literacy may increase the likelihood of household over-indebtedness. To test this hypothesis, ...

Widening the productivity gap in the Russian economy in 2009–2015: Stochastic frontier analysis using firm-level data
Bessonova E., Russian Journal of Economics 2026 Vol. 12 No. 2 P. 153–175
This paper analyzes total factor productivity (TFP) in Russia over 2009–2015 using firm-level data. Stochastic frontier analysis is employed to simultaneously estimate TFP growth and the distance to the production-possibility frontier for each firm in the sample. The results suggest significant positive rates of technological progress; however, the gap between technological frontier firms and laggards widened over ...

Facial obstructions and baseline correction shape affective computing’s detection of emotion–behavior relationships
Shepelenko A., Kosonogov V., Shestakova A., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1713462
Introduction:  Affective computing (AC) is increasingly used to study emotional processes underlying decision-making, yet its methodological validity in capturing spontaneous emotional responses and their behavioral relevance remains debated. In particular, it is unclear how facial obstructions and baseline correction affect the accuracy of AC-based facial emotion measures in capturing emotion–behavior relationships. Methods:  The predictive validity of AC-based facial ...

Neural correlates of uncertainty processing: meta-analysis of fMRI studies
Andrey Timashkov, Sarah Anderson, Oksana Zinchenko, Frontiers in Neuroscience 2025 Vol. 19 Article 1662272
The analysis revealed nine distinct activation clusters, revealing a comprehensive neural network involved in uncertainty processing. Key findings demonstrated predominant activations in the anterior insula (up to 63.7% representation), inferior frontal gyrus (up to 40.7%), and inferior parietal lobule (up to 78.1%). We found a functional specialization between emotional-motivational processes (clusters 1–5) and cognitive processes ...

Narratives we live by: sequentiality and timeliness in temporal structuring of action
Kurakin D., Theory and Society 2025 Vol. 54 P. 579–608
Cultural structures can organize experience either independently of time—‘transversely’ to its flow—or temporally—‘longitudinally’ along it. Most existing concepts—binaries, codes, norms—represent the former. Temporal structuring is much less theorized. While sociologists frequently invoke ‘narratives,’ they often use the term loosely, as a more evocative synonym for beliefs or values (e.g., ‘ecological narrative’). Recent work in pragmatism ...

Networks Under Deep Uncertainty
Fuad Aleskerov, Tkachev D., , in: Dynamics of Disasters: From Natural Phenomena to Human ActivityVol. 217.: Springer, 2024. Ch. 1 P. 1–13.
The situation of deep uncertainty is defined by the absence of any statistical evaluations of the situation development. For instance, such situations may include events that occur for the first time. We use scenario analysis to model the potential outcomes of events affecting networks under deep uncertainty. Centrality indices are used to identify vulnerable vertices ...

Konstantinova A., Filyushkina A., Maximova O. et al., Blue-Green Systems 2024 Vol. 6 No. 2 P. 327–344
In the scientific community, ecosystem services (ESs) are well-recognized as a promising concept to more actively consider and plan for the multitude of benefits provided by the green environment and thus promote sustainable urban development. Yet, to have an impact on decision-making, the concept must spread from academia to practice. To understand to what extent ...

Networks under deep uncertainty concerning food security
Aleskerov F. T., Dutta S., Egorov D. et al., The Journal of the New Economic Association 2024 No. 3(64) P. 12–29
We propose new models to find the vulnerable countries in terms of food security. These models are based on network analysis under deep uncertainty. The conditions of deep uncertainty affect the supply and demand of food, namely, carbohydrates of the countries. Under such conditions networks of the carbohydrate supply between countries are constructed. The countries ...
