Employment and Work of Middle Income Groups
The present chapter explores the middle income groups regarding their employment status and place in industrial relations. According to the prior literature, once we get the evidence that certain middle income groups hold advantaged positions in the labor market—for example, more stable employment and more influential negotiation position with employers or lower unemployment risks, or they represent a group of skilled labor professions and are able to find a more interesting and promising job where human capital is in demand, we will be entitled to speak about class-based nature of the middle income groups in Russia
The article analyzes the role of the informal component in the industrial collaboration of emploees and employers in modern Russian organizations on the basis of empirical research conducted by the authors through a survey of the staff of a number of businesses based in major cities of the Russian Federation. The paper studies a unique set of empirical data obtained by using authoring tools carefully tailored to the specific conditions of Russia. It is concluded that, with the further advancement of Russia towards establishing an effective market economy, there is a general trend towards a reduction in the role of personal relationships in social and labour relations, although a complete rejection of protectionism in this area is not possible because of certain peculiarities of the Russian mentality.

The book focuses on the new kinds of conflict that arises in the transition to a market economy. Following an editorial introduction, two chapters develop theories from new empirical research into patterns of conflict and forms of trade unionism in Russian enterprises in the transition period. These are folloed by a detailed case study of the development of an independent trade union in one industrial enterprise, and a chapter which explores changes in the status hierarchy of the industrial enterprise. Two chapters then address the much-neglected issue of gender differentiation in the work place and both chapters question the supposed passivity of Russian women workers. The two final chapters address the issue of conflict and change in the external relations of enterprises through case studies of the process of bancruptcy and of conflict insiders and outsiders. Conflict and Change in the Russian Industrial Enterprise is the second volume in the series Management and Industry in Russia, reporning on the results of a unique programme of research into the restructuring of social relations in Russian industrial production.
This book is the result of the 5th edition of the Seminar on International and Comparative Labour Law, organized, under my direction, by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law in Venice (7-11 May 2018). The Seminar was entirely dedicated to the topic “The Role of the State and Industrial Relations” and during the Young Scholars Session organized at the conclusion of the Seminar, chaired by Prof. Stefano Bellomo, several young Phd Students and Research Fellows, which actively participated to the call for paper launched by the ISLSSL, came from all over the world to discuss about the industrial relations system and about the role of the State, adopting different perspectives: national, European and supranational.
