On the methodological basis of source study of historiography the trends of European and Soviet historiography of the 1950s-1970s are compared. Variants of transition from the meta-narrative to the structural history are fixed: social/structural history in Germany (Werner Conze), the second generation of the Annals School (Fernand Braudel), the phenomenological concept of source study in the USSR (Scientific and pedagogical school of source studies of Institute for History and Archives). The article shows the specificity of the source study concept as having an empirical basis – a system of types of historical sources.
