Based on the approach of source studies of historiography, the author analyzes the references of A.S. Lappo-Danilevsky to the works of N.I. Kareev in the “Methodology of history”. The emphasis on the type of historiographic source of Lappo-Danilevsky’s work as a guide to the lecture course allowed us to distinguish three different versions of Lappo-Danilevsky’s appeal to Kareev’s works, to show that, – due to the radical difference in methodological approaches, – Lappo-Danilevsky didn’t use Kareev’s works for developing the most original part of his work – the methodology of source study, but paid attention to the concept of the authoritative scholar, including his concept in the intellectual context of the methodology of historical knowledge.
