Clustering Based on Data Envelopment Analysis: Application to Management Research and Practice
P. 142-145.
Kuskova V., Zaytsev D.
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a linear programming technique, is becoming increasingly popular in management studies. A variety of extensions have been proposed since its first introduction in the late 1970s, and lately, the idea of using the tool for clustering data has received some attention in the literature. We have further extended the idea of DEA-based clustering by introducing the notion of clustering by DEA-generated vector, with some useful applications in non-homogeneous samples, data with unclear theoretical structure, or as an explanatory tool. We demonstrate how these techniques can be used in management on a sample from education industry.

The idea that different firms can be classified into relatively homogeneous groups has been popular for many years, and many typologies have been developed and tested using a variety of classification tools. It has become apparent, however, that most clustering tools are somewhat limited, because they create groups of companies based on similar characteristics, without ...

Government efficiency is one of many fuzzy terms in contemporary political science. Due to its multidimensionality, it is not well-defined and, therefore, hard to identify. The idea of the current research is to create an index of government efficiency using data envelopment analysis. Using a sample of 127 countries for the period of 2009-2011 we ...

We address the external effects on public sector efficiency measures acquired using Data Envelopment Analysis. We use the health care system in Russian regions in 2011 to evaluate modern approaches to accounting for external effects. We propose a promising method of correcting DEA efficiency measures. Despite the multiple advantages DEA offers, the usage of this ...

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models and Free Disposal Hull (FDH) models were proposed almost simultaneously in the scientific literature. In DEA models, the constraints generate a convex set. For this reason, optimization methods and software are widely used for modeling and computations for these models. Non-convexity of production possibility set of FDH models refrained significantly ...

The paper proposes a bootstrap methodology for robust estimation of cost efficiency in data envelopment analysis. Our algorithm re-samples "naive" input-oriented efficiency scores, rescales original inputs to bring them to the frontier, and then re-estimates cost efficiency scores for the rescaled inputs. We consider the cases with absence and presence of environmental variables. Simulation analyses ...
