Структура успеваемости российских школьников и группы школьников с высокой успеваемостью

The article explores how socio-demographic characteristics of Russian children and teenagers affect their academic performance at school. As the RLMS-HSE data for 2013–2017 shows, higher academic attainments are positively associated with gender, the level of parental education, class size, extracurricular and leisure activities. Meanwhile, the type of school, place of residence, and per capita household income has little to no effect on academic performance. The detailed profile of high-achievers, obtained on the basis of the decision tree algorithm CHAID, confirms that high academic performance is strongly associated with gender: girls tend to outperform boys during the years of primary and secondary education. An important factor of high academic attainments is the Internet use for educational purposes among girls and extracurricular activities among boys. Although the model obtained on the basis of CHAID performs not that well, it clearly demonstrates the link between academic attainments and the characteristics of children and household, where they live.
