Multiplicity and non-monotonic environments
The book contains the proceedings of the 22nd Semantics and Linguistic Theory Conference, held at University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, May 18 - May 20, 2012, edited by Anca Chereches.
The current paper considers the lexico-semantical type of performative verbs and performative utterances. The definition of performative verb and its characteristics are given in the paper. The author also regards the use of performative and conditions when the phenomenon of performativity occurs. Different approaches to taxonomy of performative utterances based on illocutary force are described.
The paper discusses the results of a series of experimental studies on scalar inferences, which is part of linguistic pragmatics. The findings argue for intrascalar and interscalar diversity of scalar inferences. Moreover, it shows that adjectival scalar inferences are derived at a relatively low rate.
