Banks are the central link in the national financial market and the economy as a whole. The share of bank assets in the asset structure of the Russian financial market, despite a slight decline, remains dominant relative to other participants, reaching 80%.
Russian banks are multifaceted. On the one hand, they provide working capital financing, long-term investment lending, and settlement and cash services to clients—that is, they perform all the functions of commercial credit institutions. On the other hand, as professional participants in the financial market, banks engage in investment activities, specifically, the issuance and placement of equity and debt securities, client capital management, mergers and acquisitions, and other investment operations. Furthermore, in the data economy, banks are leading the digital transformation of the national economy. At the same time, the technological development of credit institutions not only drives their modernization but also serves as a prerequisite for their continued existence and development. Digitalization allows banks to significantly improve and accelerate processes, reduce risks, which leads to cost reductions and a stronger competitive position in the financial market. Leading systemically important credit institutions are gradually becoming AI-native banks.
The textbook "Bank in the Modern Economy" for the first time comprehensively
discloses the place of Russian banks in the financial market, as well as
the main areas of banking activity, which include
corporate lending, investment, transaction banking, and retail banking. Particular attention is paid to banking ecosystems as modern models for organizing banking activities. The role of a modern bank in the decentralized finance (DeFi) and artificial intelligence market is revealed, as well as its mission in implementing the ESG agenda. A systems approach will enable students to gain a new understanding of the significance and evolution of a modern bank in a rapidly developing national economy subject to significant external pressures and internal challenges.
