HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

LetterShip: a serious mobile game for teaching children to read

P. 1–8.
Natalia Logvinova, Dorofeeva S., Zontov Y., Uvarova E., Sergeeva E., Vishnyakov Y., Sannikov A., Kazakov A., Dragoy O.

Reading is a complex cognitive process essential for academic success and cultural access. Difficulties in reading can severely impact literacy and well-being. However, most serious games designed to help children at risk focus narrowly on phonological skills, neglecting visual and higher-order linguistic components. This paper introduces LetterShip, a serious game designed to provide comprehensive reading support by addressing the wide spectrum of processes underlying reading. The game features a two-stage architecture: Stage One builds foundational skills through visual, auditory, and multimodal training; Stage Two progresses from words to sentences, incorporating vocabulary, morphology, and syntax. A dynamic adaptive algorithm personalizes difficulty in real time based on the player’s performance, while all linguistic stimuli are systematically calibrated using psycholinguistic parameters. LetterShip provides a reading tool designed to be accessible without a prior diagnosis for typical learners and children with or at risk for dyslexia.

Comparative Analysis of Students’ Perceptions of Programming Puzzles: Parson’s and Wordle-Like
Varnavsky A., IEEE Access 2026 Vol. 14 P. 37487–37508
Puzzles are an excellent tool for learning computer science and programming, fostering increased interest, engagement, and motivation among students, as well as developing logical, critical, and computational thinking. Among beginner programmers, Parson's Programming Puzzles are quite popular, aimed at mastering the basic syntactic and logical constructs of programming languages. However, as students' skills grow, their ...

Automatic detection of dyslexia based on eye movements during reading in Russian
Laurinavichyute A., Lopukhina A., Reich D., , in: Proceedings of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational LinguisticsVol. 2: Short papers.: Wien: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2025. P. 59–66.
Dyslexia, a common learning disability, requires an early diagnosis. However, current screening tests are very time- and resourceconsuming. We present an LSTM that aims to automatically classify dyslexia based on eye movements recorded during natural reading combined with basic demographic information and linguistic features. The proposed model reaches an AUC of 0.93 and outperforms the ...

Phonological processing skills influence text-reading fluency in Russian-speaking adolescents
Eremicheva T., Nikonova Y., Alexeeva S. V., Plos One 2025 Vol. 20 No. 12 Article e0337614
It is widely acknowledged that phonological processing skills are crucial for reading acquisition. While most research has focused on examining phonological processing in children, adolescents have remained underexplored. The present study aimed to assess phonological processing (PP) skills in Russian-speaking adolescents using the Changing Sound in Pseudoword test from the Russian Test of Phonological Processing ...

Mechanisms of Dyslexia Development: Overview of the Hypotheses Based on the Experimental Studies
S. V. Dorofeeva, Human Physiology (международный журнал издательства Pleiades Publishing) 2025 Vol. 51 No. 4 P. 432–439
Specific reading disabilities (dyslexia) are a widespread problem: from 5 to 20% of the population in different countries suffer from this impairment according to the research. For effective planning of intervention programs for people with dyslexia, it is necessary to take into account a wide range of possible causes of impairment of complex reading skills. Around the world, ...

LexiaD, the first dyslexia-specific Cyrillic font compared to the popular Times New Roman and Roboto fonts when read by adults
Alexeeva S. V., Zubov V., Nikonova Y., , in: Psychological Applications Conference and Trends (InPACT 2022).: inScience Press, 2022. P. 464–468.
The LexiaD font was developed for Russian-speaking people with reading disorders (dyslexia) (Alexeeva et al., 2020). LexiaD demonstrated an advantage in letter feature extraction and information integration over other modern Cyrillic fonts (PT Sans and PT Serif) while reading by primary school dyslexic and non-dyslexic children. However, for dyslexic and non-dyslexic adolescents, the familiar Arial font was more effective ...

Ludosis in Video Game Ontology or How to Live within a Mess
Абу Махади А. М., Пащенко М. О., Галактика медиа: журнал медиа исследований 2025 Т. 1 № 8 С. 225–253
From its very beginning, the field of game studies is haunted by the question of video game ontology: what is a game and what are its fundamental components? Numerous authors, such as Ian Bogost and Alex Gekker, have written on the impossibility of establishing an exhaustive ontology of games. At the same time, game design ...

Agrammatism is a common symptom occurring in post-stroke aphasia and frequently addressed in traditional language therapy. However, most commercial serious games and mHealth applications aimed at independent aphasia treatment include only few, if any, tasks focusing on morphosyntax. “Training Impaired Grammar” (TIGr) is a project which attempts to fill the existing gap for Russian speakers ...
