Vagueness and complexity of the cultural industries’
concepts are crucial for scientifi c research and the needs
of cultural policy. In this paper, we want to clarify the
concept of cultural industry from economic perspective.
The author traces the evolution of terminology of cultural
industries, from the mid-20th century in the scientifi c
literature and in the most important documents on
cultural policy for the review of the main approaches to
the analysis of the cultural sector in economic science
and methods of assessing the impact of culture on social
and economic development of society.
The article discusses the concept of the creative city and its application in Russian cities. On the examples of Obvodny Kanal area and New Holland Island in St. Pe- tersburg the possible consequences of the creative spaces development are analyzed: social segregation, elitism and the increasing importance of the cultural consump- tion as a segregational practice.
