Магия ИННО: новое в исследовании языка и методике его преподавания : материалы Второй научно-практической конференции (Москва, 24–25 апреля 2015 г.)
Higher education is expected to develop analytical and research skills of students. An important criterion of this development in the global educational context is the ability to process and evaluate information from original sources in English, as well as to present it in a written or oral form. That is why Bachelor’s degree at the Higher School of Economics is awarded under the condition — among others — of a successful defense of a diploma project proposal in English. The present paper is aimed at analyzing the process of organization of EAP classes that would contribute to the successful preparation and defense of the diploma project. The following stages are outlined: developing research competences of students; introducing students to the formalities and technicalities of writing a research paper; improving academic skills of reading, writing and presenting. The paper also examines challenges arising in the process of undergoing these phases.
The paper discusses the design and implementation of an English for Specific Purposes course offered to 4th-year Linguistics and Intercultural Communication majors at Lomonosov Moscow State University (Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies, 2014). Drawing on a selection of domain-specific texts (authentic research reports from professional journals in the fields of linguistics, intercultural communication, and foreign language education), tasks, and activities, the proposed instructional design (named “Scientific Presentation”) aims to promote students’ knowledge of the field’s terminology and concepts and to facilitate the acquisition and development of professional skills related to their future careers in Linguistics and intercultural communication.
The current changes in the information and communication environment lead to the transformation of the process of information consumption by the audience. Potential of cross-platform resources is defined, principally, by new ways of interaction, offering special technologies of communication and activity, peculiarity in content functioning, high degree of search ability, relevance of the current information, common availability and free access for users.
The given research of language creativity has been carried out by the example of the discourse analysis of modern political terminology and other non-equivalent vocabulary within the bounds of political contexts while translating and comprehending foreign academic and scientifc texts.
Studying the aspects of the contextual actualization of political notions in the English and Russian discourses by means of the comparative analy- sis is aimed at professional explaining the motivation of the translation equivalent choice.
The algorithm of making up an associative thesaurus basing on the signs of lexical marking has been used as the major tool of political discourse analysis.
The formation of personality, ready to continuous professional growth is impossible without raising autonomy as the character traits of the modern specialist. Students’ independent work (IW) is seen as a means of developing autonomy and is not identified with the notion of independent activity (IA), which is treated as a result of autonomy and as an independent creative activity (ICA). Multimedia presentation (MmP) is a unique form of out-of-class training and learning activities of students, which has a great motivational capacity and makes it possible to solve complex educational and teaching tasks, aimed at forming students ' creative autonomy. Analysis of the students’ activity to create MmP makes it possible to identify possible stages of dialectical transition from IW to ICA. The transition from one stage to another is based on deliberate, methodically sound strategies of interaction of actors of the educational process. The efficiency of IW / ICA of students is subject to certain conditions.
