The article deals with the apparatus of contextual roles used in the situation semantics of J. Barwise and J. Perry to formalize the meaning of indexicals and demonstratives, as well as to solve broader explanatory tasks related to the pragmatic analysis of contexts. It is shown that the analysis in terms of roles makes it possible to explain not only the meaning of context-dependent expressions, but also the transit between contexts in the process of communication while preserving the content of the statement. A deep relationship is revealed within the framework of this approach between semantics, on the one hand, pragmatics and epistemology, on the other, and then a way is proposed to delimit semantics from related disciplines at the level of application of theory to specific tasks.
