‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Отношение к единому государственному экзамену как к инструменту противодействия коррупции при поступлении в национальные вузы

Высшее образование в России. 2024. Т. 33. № 5. С. 31–47.
Maksimenko A., Духанина Л. Н., Porosenkov G., Krylova D., Бушуева А. М.

Numerous All-Russian surveys of the last 5-7 years, revealing the attitude of various audiences to the Unified State Exam, present a generally more positive attitude of young people to the Unified State Exam against the background of a generally skeptical Russian population towards this tool of transition from secondary school to higher education. In this regard, it is of particular interest to study the opinions of those who faced this examination procedure (graduates who passed the unified state exam, as well as their parents).

During the online survey conducted on March 04, 2024, 711 people (45.3 % men, 54.7 % women, M = 34.73 years) were interviewed who replied that they and/or their child participated in the exam procedure. Respondents expressed their degree of agreement with the statements of the questionnaires: condemning corruption and attitudes towards the Unified State Exam.

An analysis of the data obtained showed that respondents from the province significantly more often agreed that the Unified State Exam significantly removes financial barriers to admission to Russian universities. Women were significantly more likely to agree that the Unified State Exam provides capable graduates from different social strata and from any region with the opportunity to enroll in an educational institution whose curriculum and specialty correspond to the applicant's career orientation.

Younger respondents also significantly more often agreed that the Unified State Exam provides capable graduates from different social strata of Russia to enroll in any university. Those who more agree that the Unified State Exam helped him to enter the university he (a) wanted to enter, significantly more often agreed with all the points of the questionnaire regarding the Unified State Exam as an anti-corruption tool. In addition, the same positive correlation was found between the degree of condemnation of corruption and the attitude towards the Unified State Exam as a tool for combating corruption, that is, respondents who condemn corruption more agree that the Unified State Exam is a tool for combating corruption.

Thus, we have shown that the unified state exam eliminates financial barriers to admission to Russian universities, that is, it is an anti-corruption tool, which was more often agreed by respondents who entered universities from regional and district centers, women and youth, as well as respondents who more disapprove of corruption.

При всей кажущейся ясности и недвусмысленности понятия «свобода» дать ему исчерпывающую научную дефиницию весьма затруднительно. Self-esteem and self-reported personality traits: When attitudes toward traits make a difference
Shchebetenko S., De Marchis G., / Series PsyArXiv "PsyArXiv". 2026.
Personality questionnaires do not directly record recurring conduct. Rather, they elicit task-bounded reports of personality attributions: how respondents characterise themselves using personality-descriptive content. From this perspective, established associations between self-esteem and self-reported personality may depend on the evaluative meaning attached to that content. We tested whether attitudes toward the Big Five traits moderated associations between self-esteem and corresponding personality reports ...
