Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

Связь компульсивных покупок с тревожностью и депрессией у россиян

Экономическая социология. 2024. Т. 25. № 1. С. 58–84.
Maksimenko A., Дейнека О. С., Юринова Д. В., Чарушина Е. И., Бояркин К. Е.

The article is devoted to compulsive behavior among Russians during the period of economic sanctions. It is noted that, unlike impulsive, compulsive purchases include not only and not so much purchases from the category of goods from the “checkout zone” of supermarkets, but also various manifestations of obsessive and auto-therapeutic consumption. The aim of the study was to search for correlations between the propensity to compulsive purchases with the severity of depression and the level of anxiety. In online research using services anketolog.ru and yandex.toloka.ru 524 people took part (men — 47%, women — 53%, the average age of the respondents, M = 45 years). The following methods were used: “The scale of compulsive purchases” (E. Edwards), the Russian version of the “New Scale of monetary behavior” by A. Furnham and S. Grover (adapted by T. A. Nestik, M. A. Gagarina), “The scale of depression, anxiety and stress” (DASS-21) and “The scale of sensitivity to anxiety” (ASI-3), and
demographic indicators are also taken into account. The results of the survey showed that the tendency to compulsive purchases was associated with the age and gender of the respondents, as well as with the level of
income and the degree of religiosity. Analysis of the links of compulsive purchases with depression, anxiety and stress showed that people fall into a “binge” shopping when they are upset, feel unreasoning fear, panic,
meaninglessness and emptiness of life. The propensity for impulsive shopping therapy has been found to be closely related to a person’s sensitivity to anxiety (somatic, cognitive and social). The methodological problem of the primary adaptation of the “Scale of compulsive purchases” on the Russian sample has been solved.

Neurocognitive mechanisms of source credibility: how work experience and patient ratings modulate the processing of medical veracity cues
Monahhova E., Morozova A., Gorodnicheva Y. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 No. 20 Article 1867901
Inroduction:  Source credibility is fundamental to how medical information is processed, yet the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remain poorly understood. We investigated how two credibility cues — a doctor’s expertise (years of work experience) and aggregate patient ratings (star ratings) — modulate brain responses to veracity cues (‘True’ vs. ‘False’) presented after health- related headlines. Vague stimulating ideas, images and metaphors in scientific thinking: researchers' work with horizons of unclear knowledge
Poddiakov A., / Series Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026. No. 7437658.
Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...
